Frequently Asked Questions
At minimum: a helmet, a way to carry water, a pump or CO2 inflator, a multi-tool and a spare tube or tubeless plug kit. Add a hydration pack for longer rides and a bar light plus helmet light if you ride at night.
For night trail riding, most riders use both. The bar light gives a wide, steady beam on the ground ahead, and the helmet light points where you look, into corners before the bike turns. Exposure's Joystick and Zenith are designed for helmet use and come with helmet mounts.
Bottles work for rides under two hours if your frame has cage mounts. For longer or hotter rides, a hydration pack carries 2 to 3 litres plus tools and a layer, and you can drink on rough ground without taking a hand off the bars.
How to choose bike gear
Start with the ride, not the catalogue. How to choose bike gear

• Night and early-morning rides: a bar light for the trail plus a helmet light that follows your eyes. Commuters need a rear light that's visible in daylight.
• Long or hot rides: carry water on your back in a hydration pack, or on the bike with cages and bottles.
• Overnight trips: a seat pack, frame bag and handlebar bag spread the load better than a backpack.
• Every ride: a pump, a multi-tool and a way to fix a flat.

Riding in Australian conditions
Summer rides in Queensland start before sunrise to beat the heat, so lights and water matter more than you'd think. Winter night rides at Stromlo, Derby or the You Yangs need a bar light with a long runtime. On gravel and bikepacking routes, carry spares: shops are a long way apart.
