Frequently Asked Questions
Gear Aid Tenacious Tape is the standard field fix. It sticks to nylon, polyester, PVC and rubber without sewing or heat, and can be washed once it reaches full strength after 24 hours. Use the GORE-TEX patches on GORE-TEX shells and the Silnylon patches on silicone-coated tents.
Clean and dry the seam, then run a thin bead of Seam Grip WP along it from the inside, where the seam tape has failed or was never fitted. Leave it to cure fully before you pack the tent. Silicone-coated tents need a silicone sealant instead, so check your tent's fabric first.
If rain soaks into the outer fabric instead of beading, the DWR finish has worn, not the membrane. Wash the jacket with Revivex Pro Cleaner, then apply Revivex DWR Spray or Wash-In and follow the label for heat activation. Leaks at seams or holes need tape or patches.
Yes, for nicks, small tears and split seams. Clean and dry the neoprene, brush thin coats of Gear Aid Aquaseal+NEO onto both faces of the tear, let them go tacky, then press together. It sets into an elastic rubber that stretches with the suit. Large rips may need a professional repair.
Repair: what to use on what
• Tears in jackets, packs and sleeping bags:Repair: what to use on what
• Tears in jackets, packs and sleeping bags: Tenacious Tape Repair Tape, a 7.6 x 50 cm peel-and-stick strip for nylon, polyester, PVC and rubber. For a GORE-TEX shell, use the GORE-TEX Hex Fabric Patches; for silnylon or silpoly tents, the Silnylon Patches, because ordinary tape won't stick to silicone.
• Leaking tent seams: Seam Grip WP, a clear urethane seam sealer; one 28 g tube covers about 3.6 m of seam. For a flaking tent floor coating, Seam Grip + TF.
• Boots and shoes: Aquaseal +SR glues a peeling sole back on.
• Wetsuits and neoprene: Aquaseal+NEO contact cement and the iron-on neoprene patch.
• Zips and buckles: the Zipper Repair Kit replaces a worn slider, and buckle kits fix a snapped hip belt or sternum strap.
Care: clean and reproof
Dirt and body oil stop a waterproof breathable jacket from breathing and kill its water repellency. Wash it first with Revivex Pro Cleaner, then restore the beading with Revivex DWR Spray, made for GORE-TEX, eVent and NeoShell and PFAS-free, or the Wash-In version. Revivex Down Cleaner washes down jackets and sleeping bags without flattening the down. Leather and suede boot care kits, a boot and shoe cleaner and an odour eliminator round out the range, so boots get the same care as the shell.
A field repair kit for Australian trips
For a multi-day walk, carry a short strip of Tenacious Tape, a few patches, the Seam Grip WP Field Repair Kit and a sewing kit. That covers a branch through the fly on the Overland Track, a pinhole in your mat, or a pack strap tearing on the Larapinta. More kits are on repair kits.
