Frequently Asked Questions
The Nemo Hornet Elite OSMO, at 657 g minimum weight for the one-person and 779 g for the two-person. It's semi-freestanding, so the foot end must be staked. If you want a tent that stands on its own, the Dragonfly OSMO 1P starts at 948 g.
For most walking pairs, the Nemo Dragonfly OSMO 2P: freestanding, 1.2 kg, with two doors and two vestibules. If weight matters most, the Hornet OSMO 2P is 948 g and the Hornet Elite OSMO 2P is 779 g, both semi-freestanding. For more room, the Dagger OSMO 2P has the biggest vestibules.
A freestanding tent holds its shape from the poles alone, so you can pitch it on rock or timber platforms and move it once it's up. A semi-freestanding tent needs stakes at one end to stand. It saves weight. Our freestanding tents are the Dragonfly, Dagger and Aurora.
A footprint protects the floor from rough ground and adds years to a lightweight tent, especially on granite and gravel. The Aurora comes with one. For the Hornet, Dagger, Dragonfly, Dragonfly Bikepack and Aurora Highrise, we sell the matching Nemo footprint separately.
Our only 4-person tent is the Nemo Aurora Highrise, a 7.2 kg stand-up family tent for car camping. For walking, the 3P versions of the Hornet, Dragonfly, Dagger and Aurora are the largest lightweight options. Two walkers sharing a 3P get plenty of room.
How to choose a hiking tent
Start with three questions: how many people, how much weight you'll carry, and what ground you'll pitch on.How to choose a hiking tent
Start with three questions: how many people, how much weight you'll carry, and what ground you'll pitch on.
• Capacity. A 2P is the most useful size. Two walkers splitting a 2P each carry less than two 1P tents. Nemo's 2P and 3P models have two doors and two vestibules, so nobody climbs over anybody at 2am. Go 3P if you want to sit up properly: the Hornet and Dragonfly 3P give 111 cm of peak height.
• Weight. Under 1 kg is ultralight territory. Over 2 kg buys space and sitting room.
• Freestanding or semi-freestanding. A freestanding tent (Dragonfly, Dagger, Aurora) holds its shape without stakes. A semi-freestanding tent (Hornet, Hornet Elite) needs the foot end staked to stand, which saves weight but matters on rock and timber platforms.
• Packed length. If it rides on a bike, check the length before the weight.
Our lightweight hiking tents, model by model
• Nemo Hornet Elite OSMO – Nemo's lightest: 657 g (1P), 779 g (2P). Semi-freestanding, 1200 mm fabrics. For gram counters; the 2P has 94 cm of peak height and small vestibules.
• Nemo Hornet OSMO – 822 g (1P), 948 g (2P), plus a 3P. Single-hub pole, quick to pitch in the dark.
• Nemo Dragonfly OSMO – fully freestanding from 948 g (1P), 1.2 kg (2P). The all-rounder of the range.
• Nemo Dragonfly Bikepack OSMO – the Dragonfly with short pole sections, packing to 37 cm so it fits across handlebars. 1.07 kg (1P), 1.36 kg (2P). See also bikepacking bags .
• Nemo Dagger OSMO – 2P and 3P, the roomiest of the lightweight three, with big trapezoidal vestibules.
• Nemo Aurora – 2.15 kg (2P), 2.66 kg (3P), vertical walls, 2,000 mm fly, and the footprint is in the box.
• Nemo Aurora Highrise – our one family tent: stand-up height, 4P (7.2 kg) and 6P (8.46 kg). A drive-in tent, not a hiking tent.
All seven are also grouped on our Nemo tents page. Footprints are sold separately for the Hornet, Dagger, Dragonfly, Dragonfly Bikepack and Aurora Highrise. We also stock Nemo Airpin and Sweepstake stakes, Sea to Summit Ground Control pegs and guy cords, a Gear Aid pole splint, and mosquito and head nets.
Hiking tents for Australian conditions
Tassie wet is where fabric matters. Nemo's OSMO fly is rated at three times less stretch when wet than standard nylon, so it sags less against the inner overnight. Pitch tight and re-tension before bed.
On the Overland Track and other walks with timber tent platforms, a freestanding Dragonfly or Dagger is simpler. With a Hornet, carry spare cord to tie the foot end off.
On hard summer ground, freestanding tents earn their weight again, and good pegs matter. In Queensland heat, two doors and mesh inners move air; open both vestibules.
All seven are three-season tents. They're not built for exposed alpine campsites in the Aussie Alps season (Jun–Sep).
