The Gear Aid Tent Pole Splint is the small part that saves a trip when a pole snaps. It is a rigid sleeve of anodised aluminium, 13 mm in outer diameter, that slides over the broken section of a tent pole and holds it straight, so the pole can take the tension of the fly again. It fits most tent poles, needs no tools, and rides in the pole bag until the night you need it.

What it fixes

A pole that has snapped at a joint, split along its length or been kinked by a boot in the dark. On an exposed camp on the Main Range, one strong gust can fold a pole section, and without a splint a broken pole means a sagging tent or a walk out. The splint bridges the damaged section so the frame holds its shape and you can finish the trip.

This is the 1/2 inch size in grey, 13 mm across the outside, and it fits most tent poles. A pole too thick to pass through it needs a larger splint, so slide one of your pole sections into it at home before you head out.

How to use it

  1. Straighten the damaged section as well as you can by hand and line up the broken ends.
  2. Slide the splint over one broken end and along the pole until the break sits in the middle of it.
  3. Wrap tape firmly around each end of the splint so it cannot slip along the pole.
  4. Refit the pole and pitch the tent as normal.

Repair tape or a few turns of duct tape wrapped around a pole or a lighter means you always have the tape with you.

Looking after it

Keep the splint in the pole bag so it travels with the tent on every trip rather than sitting in a drawer at home. The anodised aluminium is tough and reusable, so after a repair, peel off the tape, wipe the splint clean and put it back in the bag for next time.
