Frequently Asked Questions
One with UPF 50+ fabric, a brim that shades your face and something covering your neck. A legionnaire cap, a boonie with a neck cape like the Sunday Afternoons Backdrop, or a wide brim like the XTM Gellibrand II all do this. Add a chin strap for windy, exposed tracks.
A cap is lighter, cooler and packs flat, so it suits shady tracks and running. A bucket or wide brim hat shades your ears and neck too, which matters on open tracks in the middle of the day. Many walkers carry a cap and switch to a brimmed hat for exposed sections.
A waterproof storm hat. The Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Storm Hat is fully seam taped with a breathable membrane, a 9 cm brim and a 15.5 cm neck cape, so rain runs off past your collar. It is also rated UPF 50+ for the sunny breaks.
Measure around your head just above your ears and eyebrows. Most of our hats come in S/M and L/XL: XTM's Highland and Gellibrand II fit 56 to 58 cm and 59 to 61 cm, and the Legionnaire 58 cm and 61.5 cm. Adjusters and chin straps take up the rest.
How to choose a hiking hat
• Neck cover: the sun on the back of your neck is what burns on a long walk. TheHow to choose a hiking hat
• Neck cover: the sun on the back of your neck is what burns on a long walk. The Legionnaire Cap has a full neck protector, and the Backdrop Boonie has a 19.5 cm cape that tucks away when you don't need it.
• Brim: a bucket hat shades all round; the Gellibrand II Wide Brim Hat shades your whole face and has a chin strap for windy ridges. A cap keeps the sun off your eyes and is the lightest choice.
• Sun rating: look for UPF 50+ on the fabric. Note that on the Eclipse Cap and Brushline Bucket the vent mesh is not rated, while the Backdrop's rating includes its mesh.
• Wind and heat: a chin strap (Highland, Gellibrand II, Brushline, Backdrop) keeps a hat on in a gust. Mesh vents and a crushable brim help on hot climbs.
• Rain: the Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Storm Hat is fully seam taped with a breathable membrane, a 9 cm brim and a neck cape. Many walkers prefer it to a cinched jacket hood.
• Sizing: most hats come in two sizes. Measure around your head above the ears: the XTM Highland and Gellibrand II fit 56–58 cm (S/M) and 59–61 cm (L/XL).

Hats for Australian walking
On the Larapinta, K'gari or an open Grampians ridge in summer, choose a legionnaire, boonie or wide brim with UPF 50+ and a chin strap. For shady rainforest walks in the Gold Coast hinterland, a cap or vented bucket hat is enough. In Tasmania or the Victorian high country, carry the storm hat, and swap to a beanie once it turns cold.
