Long enough to lower from the top anchor of your longest route back to the ground, with the ends still in your hands. Check the guidebook for your local crags. All our dynamic ropes come in 60 and 70 m. The Classic ropes and the Adam Ondra also come in 80 m, and the 9.5 Crag We Care Classic in 50 m too. The Dry Crag ropes stop at 70 m.
A dry rope has a water- and dirt-repellent treatment. Mammut's Dry ropes absorb under 1.5% water in the UIAA test and gain extra abrasion resistance. A Classic rope is untreated, made for the gym and for rock climbing in good weather, and usually costs less.
No. A static rope like the Mammut 10.0 Performance Static stretches less than 5% and cannot absorb a lead fall. Use it for fixed lines, hauling, abseil lines and rigging top-rope anchors. Any time a climber could fall onto the rope, use a dynamic climbing rope.
Retire a rope after a severe fall, or if you find cuts, core showing through the sheath, glazing, stiff or soft spots, or chemical contact. Wear depends on how often and where you climb, so check the sheath by hand before every session rather than relying on a set number of years.
How to choose a climbing rope
• Diameter: 9.8 mm ropes (61–64 g per metre) are the hard-wearing pick for gym laps and volume days. 9.5 mm (58–60 g/m) saves weight for sport climbing. The 8.7 mm Adam Ondra rope (51 g/m) is for redpoints and is rated for 5 UIAA falls, against 8 for the Crag Dry ropes.How to choose a climbing rope

• Length: your rope must reach the ground when you lower off the anchor, so the longest pitches at your crag set the length. Check the guidebook. 70 and 80 m give you margin on long sport routes.
• Dry or Classic: Mammut's Dry treatment repels water and dirt, absorbs under 1.5% water in the UIAA test and adds abrasion resistance. Classic ropes are untreated and PFC-free, made for the gym and rock in fine weather.
• Middle mark: Duodess ropes change sheath pattern at the halfway point. Mammut describes this mark as durable and always visible, which helps when you set up a rappel.
• Dynamic or static: dynamic ropes stretch to catch a fall. A static rope barely stretches and is never for leading or belaying.
