Frequently Asked Questions
Most people take one every 45–60 minutes during efforts over about 90 minutes, with water. Start early rather than waiting until you feel flat. Chews like Clif BLOKS or a carb drink like Tailwind Endurance Fuel can replace some gels. Test your timing in training before a race or big walk.
On hot days, long climbs or anything over a few hours, most walkers benefit. Sweat takes sodium with it, and plain water doesn't replace it. SaltStick Caps, FastChews and Koda Electrolyte Sticks are small enough to carry in a hip-belt pocket and take as you go.
No. Gels and chews work for any long effort, including big walking days and long rides. They are light, quick to eat and don't need water to prepare. Start with one every 45–60 minutes on a long day and test them on a training walk before a big trip.
Yes, a small range. We stock Campers Pantry Freeze-dried Expedition Meals, which are Australian-made and only need boiling water added to the pouch. They come in single serve and XL sizes, and all three flavours we stock are vegetarian. You'll find them on our Hiking Meals page.
How to choose energy gels and trail fuel
Long efforts need three things: carbs to keep you going, salt to replace what you sweat out, and a proper meal at the end of the day. Most people get the first two wrong. They eat too little on the move, then wonder why the last climb hurts. How to choose energy gels and trail fuel

• Energy gels and chews. Koda Energy Gel and Clif BLOKS Energy Chews are quick to eat with one hand. Chews suit people who don't like gels. SaltStick Energy Gummies are another chewable option.
• Fuel you drink. Tailwind Endurance Fuel is a drink mix with carbs and electrolytes in one bottle, so you can skip gels on long days if your stomach prefers it.
• Salt and electrolytes. SaltStick Caps, FastChews and Race Ready Caps Plus (with caffeine), Koda Electrolyte Sticks and Puresport Electrolyte Hydration all put back sodium and other electrolytes. See our full electrolytes and electrolyte chews range.
• Recovery. Tailwind Fava Recovery Mix is a drink for after the effort, not during it.
A simple rule for a long day: take a gel, a few chews or a drink every 45–60 minutes, and add electrolytes when it's hot or you're sweating hard. Try new fuel in training first, not on race day or day one of a big trip. Stomachs differ, and the gel you like on a run may not sit well on a long climb with a heavy pack.
What we stock: energy gels, chews and electrolytes
The range is small and focused on things that travel well:

Gels and chews are also grouped in Energy Bars, Gels & Chews.
Fuel and salt in Australian conditions
Heat changes everything. On a summer day in Queensland or a long dry stretch of the Larapinta you can sweat out a lot of salt, and plain water alone won't replace it. Many walkers, riders and runners carry electrolyte capsules or a drink mix for exactly this. In the Aussie Alps season (June to September) the problem flips: you sweat less, drink less, and still need the carbs to stay warm. Keep gels and chews in an inside pocket so they stay soft enough to eat.
Whatever the season, carry a water filter so you can refill from creeks and tanks and mix your drinks on the go. See water filtration.
