Description
KODA Energy Gel is fast carbohydrate in a gel you can take on the move - designed to go down without water and to be used just before and during effort, when you need fuel for the brain and working muscles.
What it is and when to use it
Take one just before you start, then keep taking them through the effort. Gels exist to get fuel to your brain and working muscles at a heart rate where digestion has largely stopped cooperating, and that constraint is the whole design problem.
Taste and texture
The number that matters is energy to volume: 117 calories in 33 ml. Your gut can only process so much while you are working hard, so a gel that delivers the same energy in less volume is a gel that is less likely to sit in your stomach and ruin the back half of your day. It also means a sip of water is enough rather than the mouthful other gels demand.
Koda test every ingredient for low sensory impact - not sickly sweet, no aftertaste, nothing that makes you notice you are eating. The point is that your focus stays on what you are doing.
Caffeine, sodium and what varies
Three flavours carry 80 mg of caffeine: Cappuccino, Cola Vanilla and Green Plum. Wild Berry, Berry Banana, Cola, Lemon Lime and Mango Passion have none. The usual approach is to save the caffeinated ones for the second half.
The quality of the maltodextrin is where Koda separate themselves, and it is worth knowing: cheaper grades carry more refined processed sugars, and that is exactly what causes stomach trouble at a raised heart rate. Koda specify a high grade for that reason.
How to take it
One before the start, then at intervals. A sip of water with it is plenty. The low thermic effect means your body spends very little energy converting it - it arrives already in the semi-fluid form the stomach recognises and passes through fast, without pulling blood away from your working muscles.
Single 45 g sachets, 6 packs, boxes of 24, or a Mixed Box.
Who should not
The caffeinated flavours are not for children or anyone advised to limit caffeine. Check the sachet if you are tracking carbohydrate or sodium closely.
