Frequently Asked Questions
Very little. Both run up the calf and use merino for warmth. Ski boots are stiff and close-fitting, so many skiers prefer a thin sock like the Pro-Fit II. Snowboard boots are softer, so riders often pick a padded sock like the Half Pipe II or Valentino. Most of our adult socks are made for both; the Sochi Merino Blend is pitched at skiers.
Thin, if your boots fit well. A thin, smooth sock lets the boot hold your foot and leaves your toes room to move, which keeps them warmer. Choose more padding, like the Dual Density, if your boots are a little roomy or your shins get sore by day two. Never wear two pairs.
Merino keeps your feet warm while it breathes and resists odour, so a pair copes with a full day in the boot. XTM's Pro-Fit II and Slalom are 80% Australian merino; the padded Half Pipe II, Sochi II, Dual Density and Valentino are 40% merino, blended with synthetics for durability and stretch.
Go by foot length. XTM's adult sizes are A2-8 for 23–25 cm feet, A6-10 for 26–28 cm and A11-14 for 29–31 cm. If you sit in the overlap between A2-8 and A6-10 (US 6 to 8), measure your foot. Kids' socks come in K5-8, K9-12 and K13-3.
How to choose snowboard socks and ski socks
• Thin or padded:How to choose snowboard socks and ski socks
• Thin or padded: a thin sock like the Merino Pro-Fit II lets a well-fitted ski boot hold your foot where the liner was shaped. Padded socks like the Half Pipe II put padding on the shin for long days riding. The Dual Density adds cushioning on top for rental boots that need a little more padding.
• One pair only: wear a single sock in the boot. Two pairs squeeze the foot and leave it colder.
• Merino content: the Pro-Fit II and Slalom are 80% Australian merino. The Half Pipe II, Sochi II, Dual Density and Valentino are 40% merino with acrylic, polyester and elastane for durability and stretch.
• Length: ski and snowboard socks run up the calf so there is no sock edge under the boot cuff. The Pro-Fit II leg is 37 cm.
• Size: XTM's adult sizes go by foot length: A2-8 fits 23–25 cm, A6-10 fits 26–28 cm and A11-14 fits 29–31 cm.

Socks for an Aussie snow season
A day at Thredbo or Falls Creek can start well below zero on the chairlift and end in slush. Merino keeps feet warm while it breathes, and resists odour, so one pair handles a full day and the walk to dinner. Pull socks up smooth before you buckle the boot, and pack a spare pair for day two. Hot Hands heat packs in a pocket help on the coldest lifts. Pair them with women's thermals or men's thermals, and see heated socks for feet that always run cold.
