Frequently Asked Questions

Open the pouch, add boiling water to the fill line, stir, seal it and wait a few minutes. Then eat straight from the pouch. There's no pot to scrub, and the empty pouch packs flat so you can carry it out. A stove, a mug for measuring water and a long spoon are all you need.

Freeze-drying removes water at low temperature, so flavour, texture and nutrients hold up better and the food rehydrates into recognisable pieces. Dehydrating uses heat. It's cheaper but loses more texture. Campers Pantry Expedition Meals are freeze-dried and Australian-made, and come in single serve and XL pouches.

It depends on your size, pace and the weather. For dinner, Campers Pantry's single serve (400 g made up) suits a light eater or short day, and the XL (500 g made up) suits a hard day. Add breakfast, lunch and snacks, and take a spare meal on longer trips.

The three flavours we currently stock are all vegetarian: Cauliflower and Pea Dahl, Spicy Mexican Beans and Vegetarian Pasta Medley. Check the ingredients list on each pouch if you have an allergy or follow a specific diet, or ask our team before you order.

How to choose dehydrated meals for hiking

Three things matter: portion size, how much water you need, and whether you'll actually want to eat it on night four.

How to choose dehydrated meals for hiking

Three things matter: portion size, how much water you need, and whether you'll actually want to eat it on night four.

• Portion size. Campers Pantry Single Serve is 100 g dry and 400 g made up. XL is 125 g dry and 500 g made up. After a big day on the track, the single serve is a light dinner. If you're walking hard, take the XL.

• Water. You need boiling water to the fill line on the pouch, so plan your fuel and water for every meal. A small camp stove and pot is all it takes.

• Weight and shelf life. Freeze-dried meals are light and keep well, so a few can live in your pack between trips.

Dehydrated vs freeze-dried meals

People search for "dehydrated meals", but there's a difference. Freeze-drying removes water at a low temperature, which keeps more of the flavour and texture. You get food with recognisable pieces in it, not a uniform mush. Dehydrating uses heat and is cheaper, but more of the texture goes. The Campers Pantry Expedition range is freeze-dried.

Flavours in stock now:

• Cauliflower and Pea Dahl (single serve and XL)

• Spicy Mexican Beans (single serve)

• Vegetarian Pasta Medley (single serve)

All three are vegetarian. Check the ingredients on each pouch if you have allergies or a special diet.

Hiking meals for Australian tracks

On a multi-day walk like the Overland Track or the Larapinta, there are no shops between start and finish. Every dinner goes in your pack from day one, so light, compact meals make a real difference. In Tassie wet or on a cold night in the Alps, a hot meal you can make in a few minutes and eat from the pouch inside your tent is worth more than a heavier fresh one.
