For day walks where rain is possible, 10,000 mm like the XTM Stash 2L is fine. For long days in steady rain, such as the Overland Track, choose a 3-layer jacket rated 15,000 mm or more, like the Kakadu II or Innisfail II, with sealed seams and pit zips to let heat out.
For a wet multi-day walk, yes: wet trousers make you cold once you stop. The Stash 2L rain pant packs into its own pocket at about 265 g, and the Styx and Takayna have lower leg zips so you can pull them on over boots without sitting in the mud.
A poncho covers you and your pack and vents well, and the Sea to Summit tarp ponchos double as a shelter. A rain jacket is better in strong wind and on scrambly ground where a poncho flaps. Many walkers carry a jacket and a pack cover instead.
A light, stretchy pant rated UPF 50+ that dries quickly. The XTM Sturgeon zips off into shorts above the knee, the Glenaire is a slim 4-way stretch pant, and the Ironbark is quick drying with an elastic waist. All three keep the sun off your legs on exposed tracks.

• Packable or full shell: the Stash 2L (about 400 g, 10,000 mm waterproof) stuffs into its own pocket for day walks where rain is a maybe. The Takayna Men's is a 2.5-layer HydroVENT20+ shell with 20K breathability that also stows into its pocket.
• For hours of rain: the Kakadu II and unisex Innisfail II are 3-layer shells rated 15,000 mm waterproof and 10,000 g/m² breathable, with pit zips and a storm flap. This is the jacket for the Overland Track or a wet week in the Tassie south-west.
• Longer cover: the Stash 2L 3/4 Length has a 98 cm back length on size L.
• Seams: every XTM rain jacket here is fully seam sealed.
Rain pants and ponchos
The Stash 2L rain pant weighs about 265 g and packs into its pocket. The 3-layer Styx (15,000 mm) has lower leg zips, and the Styx Short Leg has a 76 cm inleg on a size L. The Takayna Rain Pant is rated 20,000 mm. For ponchos, the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Nano Tarp Poncho is a raincoat, pack cover and tarp in 230 g, and XTM's Stash ponchos start at $12.13.
Men's hiking pants and other outerwear
• Hiking pants: the Sturgeon zips off above the knee, the Glenaire is a slim 4-way stretch pant, and the Ironbark is a quick-dry travel pant with an elastic waist and belt. All three are rated UPF 50+.
