The XTM Performance Marengo is a men's quarter-zip fleece pullover in 180 gsm micro fleece: 60% recycled Seawool PET and 40% polyester, a fabric made from discarded oyster shells and recycled plastic bottles. It is light and quick drying, has a zipped chest pocket and weighs about 330 g. Choose Black or Kalamata, in sizes S to 3XL.

Who it's for

Walkers and campers who want a warm layer that goes on at the first cool change and comes off on the climb. Pull it on at a frosty trailhead in the Blue Mountains, over a tee for a winter day walk in the Gold Coast hinterland, or around the fire at camp once the sun drops. It is just as good for the drive home and the café after.

The quarter zip is the reason we like a pullover fleece for walking. Drop it open when you are working uphill, zip it to the collar when you stop for lunch on a windy ridge.

Fit and layering

The Marengo sits over a merino or synthetic base layer and under a rain shell, which makes it the warm middle of a three-layer system. The two-piece sleeves and front and back yokes give it shape through the shoulders, so it moves with you when you reach for a trekking pole or a pack strap.

Fabric and construction

Seawool is XTM's recycled micro fleece. Oyster shells that would otherwise be thrown out are blended with recycled PET bottles to give a fleece with a soft, wool-like handle. The fabric is anti-bacterial, anti-static and odourless, and it dries fast when you have been caught in a shower or sweated through a climb. At 180 gsm it gives real warmth without the bulk of a heavy pile fleece.

The Marengo is a certified carbon neutral product.

Packability and weight

An average Marengo weighs 330 g. That is light enough to roll into the bottom of a day pack as your just-in-case layer, and it will not add much to an overnight load either.
