Frequently Asked Questions
At least 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm hex keys, a T25 Torx and a Phillips head: that covers stems, seatposts, bottle cages, cleats and most disc rotor bolts. Riders on long or remote rides should add a chain breaker, and tubeless riders a plug tool, like the reamer and plug tool inside the Topeak Tubi 11.
If you ride far from the car or on bikepacking trips, yes. A broken chain without one means walking. The Lezyne Rap II 18 and SV Pro 13 both include a chain breaker and quick-link storage. For short local rides, a lighter 7 function tool such as the V Pro 7 or SV Pro 7 is enough.
Most small holes seal with sealant. For a cut that keeps hissing, use a plug tool: ream the hole, load a plug into the insertion tool, push it in and trim the tail. The Topeak Tubi 11 has the reamer, plug tool and a knife built into a multi tool; the Combo comes with five plugs.
How to choose a bike multi tool
• Match the bolts on your bike:How to choose a bike multi tool
• Match the bolts on your bike: most modern bikes need 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm hex keys, a T25 Torx for disc rotors and a Phillips head. The Lezyne V Pro 7 and SV Pro 7 cover those. Add 2, 2.5 and 8 mm hex and a T30 for derailleur limit screws and crank bolts: the V Pro 11 and SV Pro 13 have them.
• Chain breaker: a snapped chain on the back half of a long loop means a long walk. The Lezyne Rap II 18 and SV Pro 13 include a chain breaker and a spot to store a spare quick link.
• Tubeless repair: the Topeak Tubi 11 is an 83 g tool with six hex keys, a T25, a tyre lever, a knife and a reamer and plug tool in one body. The Combo version adds five plugs and a neoprene bag.
• Inflation: the Rap II 19 CO2 pairs the chain breaker with a CO2 dispenser, so one tool sorts a flat and a broken chain.
• Size and weight: a 6 or 7 function tool fits a jersey pocket or the smallest saddle bag; a 13 to 19 function tool belongs in a frame or saddle bag.

Trailside repairs in Australia
Rocky descents at Mt Buller and thorns in dry country west of the Divide are where a plug tool earns its place. Carry the multi tool, a spare tube, levers and a pump or CO2 in a saddle bag or frame bag, and check your bolts against the tool before the ride, not on the trail.
