Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, with snow baskets. A summer basket sinks into soft snow, while a wider winter basket holds the pole near the surface. Several Black Diamond poles include snow baskets, Komperdell's vario poles swap to a winter basket, and the ice-flex expedition poles tilt their basket with the slope.
On flat ground, set the poles so your elbow sits at about 90 degrees with your hand on the grip. Shorten them for long climbs and lengthen them for descents. Adjustable poles like the Highlander Zero (105 to 140 cm) or the push-button Stiletto Expedition make this quick.
No. These are trekking and touring poles for walking, snowshoeing and ski touring. For resort skiing you need fixed alpine ski poles, which we do not stock. For touring, the Stiletto Expedition and Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z are the ones to look at.

• Baskets: a small trekking basket punches straight through soft snow. Black Diamond's Pursuit Carbon Z, Pursuit Carbon FLZ and Distance Carbon Z FKT come with snow baskets. Komperdell's vario-basket poles, such as the Highlander Zero, swap between summer and winter baskets.
• Ice-flex: the Carbon FXP.4 Expedition Vario and Stiletto Expedition have moveable ice-flex baskets that follow the slope on a traverse, up to 28 degrees on the FXP.4. Spare Ice Flex Winter Baskets and Regular UL Iceflake FXP Baskets fit the ice-flex tip.
• Adjustable length: shorten on the climb, lengthen on the descent. The Stiletto Expedition changes length at the push of a button, which helps on a skin track full of kick turns.
• Aluminium or carbon: aluminium, like the Highlander Zero and Trailhunter Zero, is the tough, cheaper choice. Carbon, like the Komperdell C3 Cloud, saves weight.
• Grips: foam grips, like the EVA on Black Diamond's Distance Carbon FLZ, stay usable when wet, where cork can turn slick.
Ski touring and snowshoe poles
For ski touring, the Stiletto Expedition is built for intensive touring days, and the Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z folds to 37 cm for the pack between sections. For snowshoeing, any adjustable pole with a snow basket works. We do not stock alpine resort ski poles, so for lift-served skiing, use the poles from your ski hire shop.
Snow poles in Australia
A winter walk up Mount Kosciuszko from Thredbo, a snowshoe loop out of Charlotte Pass, or a frosty start in the Tasmanian highlands: on all of them, poles with wide baskets save your knees and your balance. Add ice grips for icy paths.
