Description
The Komperdell FXP Composite Trail is a self-deploying folding pole for trail running and fast hiking, built on a 16 mm carbon shaft in three sections. This blue version has a slim tape grip with swappable non-slip tape and the quick hook-in Fly sport strap. The 125 cm size folds to 45 cm, and we stock 105 to 135 cm.
Who it's for
The FXP Composite Trail suits runners and fastpackers stepping up to poles for the first time, and anyone who wants poles for long, hilly days. Picture the stairs of the Six Foot Track, the climbs of the Great North Walk, or a steep fire trail in the Gold Coast hinterland: the poles come out for the ups and downs and fold away again when the track flattens.
Weight against durability
The shaft is 16 mm carbon in three sections, a little wider than the 14 mm shaft of Komperdell's Erlkönig. Like any carbon pole, keep it from being levered between rocks.
Locking and adjustment
The FXP Composite Trail comes in fixed lengths from 105 to 135 cm in 5 cm steps, so there is no lever to set. Komperdell's self-deploying FXP mechanism means it is immediately ready to use: draw the pole from your pack, release the sections and it pulls itself together, ready to plant. For sizing, most runners like the elbow at roughly a right angle with the tip on flat ground; go a size down if your races are mostly steep climbing.
Packed length
The 125 cm size folds to 45 cm. Folded, it can be stowed on your pack, leaving both hands free for scrambles and aid stations.
Grips and baskets
The grip is Komperdell's slim Trail Pro Tape design, wrapped in a non-slip tape with a special anti-slip coating for grip. It is meant to be changed: when the tape wears, or you want a new look, swap it for one of Komperdell's other colours. The super-light Fly sport strap is quick and easy to use, simply hook in, and Komperdell say it gives easy handling and maximum power transmission. A Fly loop strap is available separately.
Looking after it
Rinse off mud and grit after a wet run and dry the pole fully before folding it away. Replace the grip tape as soon as it starts to lose its tack.
