Merino resists odour and stays comfortable from cool mornings to warm afternoons, so it suits multi-day walks. Synthetic shirts and pants dry faster and often carry a UPF 50+ rating, which suits hot, sweaty day walks. Many walkers wear merino next to the skin and synthetics on top.

Building a men's layering kit
Start with a base layer: a merino shirt or thermal for cool days and multi-day walks, or a UPF 50+ shirt for hot, open tracks. Add a mid layer, such as a fleece or WoolxLoft vest, for cold starts and camp. Finish with a seam-sealed rain jacket and rain pants for the outer layer. That kit covers most Australian walking from the Larapinta in winter to the Overland Track. Gloves and a beanie weigh little and make a big difference on a cold, windy ridge. For a snow trip, swap the rain shell for an insulated snow jacket and pants, and keep the thermals.
