Description
The XTM Performance Overland is a mid-weight merino wool-blend hiking sock: 55% merino, 25% nylon, 15% polyester and 5% elastane, with terry cushioning throughout, an X-shaped compression zone and a seamless toe. It has a 24 cm leg, weighs 86 g a pair and comes in three adult unisex sizes, in Black or Spruce Green.
Who it's for
Walkers who want padding under every step and warmth on cold mornings. The Overland is the sock for full days in leather boots on rocky ground: the Overland Track's boardwalk and scree, a winter week on the Australian Alps Walking Track, or the steep descents of the Scenic Rim with a full pack. The terry loops cushion the foot all the way round, and the merino handles the sweat when the climb warms you up.
If you walk mostly in warm weather or in trail runners, XTM's lighter Venture sock is the other one to look at. For boots, cold starts and long days, this is the one we would pack.
Fit and layering
Regular fit, shaped to follow the foot with ease for movement. The X compression zone wraps the arch and holds the sock in place, so it does not slide down into your boot or bunch at the heel on a long descent. A comfort band holds up the cuff without digging into your calf.
- Size A2-8 (S): US 2-8, Euro 36-39, foot length 23-25 cm
- Size A6-10 (M): US 6-10, Euro 40-44, foot length 26-28 cm
- Size A11-14 (L): US 11-14, Euro 45-48, foot length 29-31 cm
- 24 cm leg, crew height, well above the collar of a mid-cut boot
Fabric and construction
The yarn is 55% merino for warmth and comfort next to skin, with nylon and polyester for hard wear and elastane for stretch. Terry cushioning runs through the whole sock, while a lightweight rib over the top of the foot lets heat escape and stops the sock feeling bulky under your laces. The toe is seamless, so there is no ridge to rub on the way down. The Overland is a certified carbon neutral product.
Packability and weight
An average pair weighs 86 g. A dry spare pair for camp is worth carrying on any overnight walk.
Care
Turn the socks inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle and line dry. Skip the fabric softener, which coats wool fibre and dulls the way merino handles moisture.
