Frequently Asked Questions
As a guide, under 2 suits summer, 2 to 4 is three-season, 4 to 6 handles frost, and above 6 is for snow. For most Australian walking outside winter, the Tensor Trail (R 2.8) is enough. For one pad all year, the Tensor All-Season (R 5.4) is the sensible middle.
Air pads such as the Tensor are lighter and pack smaller for the same warmth. Self-inflating pads like the Flyer and Roamer have a foam core, which feels more like a mattress. If you get a puncture, there's still cushioning under you that night.
The Tensor range is built to be quiet. Its insulating film floats inside the baffles instead of being bonded to the shell, so it avoids the crackle most insulated air pads make when you roll over. Foam and self-inflating pads like the Switchback, Flyer and Roamer are quiet too.
The Roamer and the Flyer Cloud (Regular Wide and Long Wide) have built-in toggles and loops to join two pads side by side. If you'd rather have one pad with no gap down the middle, the Quasar 3D comes as a Double.
How to choose a sleeping pad
R-value first. It measures how well a pad stops the ground drawing heat out of you. A rough guide: under 2 is summer, 2 to 4 is three-season, 4 to 6 handles frost, above 6 is snow. Your sleeping bag does little underneath you because your weight crushes the fill. How to choose a sleeping pad

Then the type.
• Insulated air pads are the lightest for the warmth and pack smallest.
• Self-inflating pads have a foam core. If you get a puncture there's still cushioning under you.
• Closed-cell foam has nothing to puncture at all.
Then size. Take a Wide if your elbows hang off a standard mat, or if you sleep on your side.
Our sleeping pads by type
• Hiking sleeping pads (insulated air): Nemo Tensor Trail (R 2.8, 395 g Regular), Tensor All-Season (R 5.4), Tensor Extreme Conditions (R 8.5, 505 g), Tensor Elite, and the comfort-first Eclipse All-Season. Tensors are 8.9 cm thick and built to be quiet, without the crisp-packet crackle.
• Deep air pads: Nemo Astro and Quasar 3D, Insulated or Non-Insulated. Cross baffles lie flat, and a raised head baffle holds your pillow. The Quasar 3D comes as a Double.
• Self-inflating: Nemo Flyer and Flyer Cloud for walking, and the Roamer camp mattress (Single to Double Wide) for car camping.
• Foam: Nemo Switchback (R 2, 415 g), plus the Chipper foam seat.
• Spares: Sea to Summit Air Mat Repair Kit.
Camping mattresses for Australian conditions
Queensland, the coast and the Top End in the dry: a Non-Insulated Astro or Quasar 3D is enough. Spring and autumn in the Grampians or the Blue Mountains: go insulated. Snow camping in the Aussie Alps season (Jun–Sep): R 6 or more, which means the Tensor Extreme Conditions. Or put a Switchback under a Tensor All-Season.
Clear prickles and sticks before you inflate, and use the pump sack rather than your breath. It keeps moisture out of the pad.
