Description
Description
The Nemo Tensor Trail is a three-season insulated sleeping pad with an R-value of 2.8, weighing 395 g in Regular and 8.9 cm thick. It uses Nemo's Spaceframe baffles and aluminized film insulation, in mummy and rectangular shapes across four sizes.
Who it's for
Backpackers counting grams through spring, summer and autumn. At 395 g in Regular this is the pad you carry when weight is the priority and the ground is not frozen.
For frost and snow, the Tensor Extreme Conditions runs an R-value of 8.5 for about 110 g more. For car camping, thickness matters more than weight and there are cheaper ways to get it.
What R-value means for you
R-value measures how well a pad stops heat escaping into the ground, and it is the number that decides whether you sleep. A sleeping bag insulates the air around you; underneath, your body weight crushes the fill flat and the bag does almost nothing. Rough guide: under 2 is summer, 2 to 4 is three-season, 4 to 6 handles frost, and above 6 is snow.
At 2.8 the Tensor Trail is squarely three-season. Australian alpine nights in winter will find its limit; spring through autumn almost anywhere else it will not.
Comfort and noise
8.9 cm thick, which is enough that a side sleeper's hip does not reach the ground. The Spaceframe baffles hold the surface flat rather than letting it bulge into ridges, which is what makes a cheap pad feel like sleeping on a pool toy.
Nemo build the Tensor line to be quiet. Most insulated pads crackle when you move, because the reflective film inside them is stiff — rolling over then wakes whoever is next to you. This is the reason to choose a Tensor over a cheaper insulated pad.
Weight
Regular Mummy 369 g, Regular 395 g, Regular Wide 491 g, and Long Wide heavier again. Packed weights run 451 g to 576 g including the pump sack and repair kit.
The mummy cut saves 26 g over the rectangular Regular. Worth taking only if you sleep still — a mummy pad punishes anyone who moves at night.
