A neck gaiter is a tube that covers your neck and can be pulled up over your chin and nose. A balaclava also covers your head, leaving an opening for your face, so it suits windy chairlifts and very cold days. Both come in merino, microfleece and GORE-TEX Infinium versions.
They help on cold trips. A thin liner like the XTM Merino Gloves or Arctic Thermal Liner adds warmth inside a ski glove or mitt, and stays on when you take the outer glove off to fix a binding or use your phone. On a cool walk, a liner is often enough on its own.
For people whose feet get painfully cold, often yes. Therm-ic heated socks use a rechargeable battery pack to warm the toes, with three heat levels, so they suit long lift days and cold-climate trips. For most walkers, a thick merino sock and a dry boot are enough.

Which accessories do you need?
For winter day walks, a windproof glove or a liner and a light neck gaiter cover most days. XTM's gaiters run from the UPF 50+ Scenic neck tube for sun to merino, microfleece and sherpa styles for cold. For the snow, add an insulated glove or mitt, a balaclava for windy chairlifts and liners for extra warmth. If your hands and feet always run cold, heated socks and gloves are the step up.
