Frequently Asked Questions
Merino breathes, regulates temperature and resists odour, so you can wear it for several days on a hike and sleep in it. Synthetic thermals like XTM Heatflex dry faster, cost less (from $22.95) and handle rough washing. Many people walk in merino and keep a Heatflex set for the snow or for work.
170 gsm, like the Adventure170 range, is a light layer for travel and mild days. 200 to 210 gsm, like Active200 and Ottie Merino, is a midweight for active cold days. 230 gsm, like XTM's Merino 230, is the heaviest merino we stock and suits snow trips and winter camping.
Yes. XTM's Plus Size Merino 230 Long Sleeve Thermal Top is cut for 4XL to 7XL, with matching plus size thermal pants, and the Adventure170 plus size top comes in 4-5XL and the long sleeve shirt in 4-5XL and 6-7XL. The standard Heatflex range goes to 3XL.
Close fitting, not restrictive. A base layer only moves sweat away and holds warmth when it touches your skin, so a loose thermal works less well. XTM's Merino 230 has a slim fit, and the Ottie Merino top and bottoms include 5% elastane so they stretch with you.
How to choose men's thermals
• Merino or synthetic: merino regulates temperature, resists odour so you can wear it for days, and stays comfortable on bare skin. The syntheticHow to choose men's thermals
• Merino or synthetic: merino regulates temperature, resists odour so you can wear it for days, and stays comfortable on bare skin. The synthetic Heatflex Thermal Top is 180 g/m² polypro with Polygiene odour control: it dries fast and is the cheapest way into a proper base layer.
• Fabric weight: the gsm number tells you how heavy the knit is. The Adventure170 range is a light 170 gsm for all seasons and travel, Active200 and Ottie Merino sit at 200–210 gsm, and XTM's Merino 230 is the heaviest merino we stock.
• Fit: thermals work best close to the skin. XTM's Merino 230 is a slim fit, and the Ottie Merino top has 5% elastane so it moves with you and keeps its shape.
• Full or 3/4 pants: the Merino 230 3/4 Length Thermal Pants stop at mid-calf, so only your sock is inside the ski boot. For walking and sleeping, take the full-length Merino 230 Thermal Pants.
• Venting: the Merino 230 Zip Neck Top lets heat out on a climb, and the Active200 top has merino mesh zones and thumb loops.

Thermals for Australian conditions
In the Aussie Alps season, June to September, a merino top under your jacket and 3/4 pants in your boots will see you through a week at Falls Creek or Perisher. On a winter walk on the Overland Track or the Australian Alps Walking Track, a 200–230 gsm merino set does two jobs: walk in it all day, then sleep in it. A light Adventure170 top covers cool spring walks and travel. For women's sizes see women's thermals, or browse all thermals.
