Men's Merino 230 Wool Zip Neck Thermal Top

XTM Men's Merino 230 Wool Zip Neck Thermal Top is the warm merino base layer for cold mornings on the hill and long days in the bush. It is knitted from 100% fine Australian merino at 230 g/m2 and 20.5 micron, in a slim fit with a YKK zip neck collar you can open when you heat up and close when the wind turns. Black or Kalamata, men's sizes S to 3XL.

Who it's for

Skiers riding chairlifts at Perisher in August, hikers heading up Mt Kosciuszko in the shoulder season, anglers on a freezing dawn at Lake Eucumbene. XTM rate this top 4 of 4 for warmth and 3 of 4 for breathability, and describe the merino as extremely breathable. The zip neck is the difference over a crew: pull it up under a shell on the chairlift, drop it open on the skin track or the climb.

Fit and layering

A slim fit, shaped and close to the body, so it sits close under a fleece or shell. The back length is 72 cm on a size M, worn here by a 182 cm model. Raglan sleeves add extra comfort, flatlock seams cut down on chafing, and thumb gussets keep the cuffs over your wrists when you pull gloves on.

At 20.5 micron the fibre is fine, non-itch and soft to the hand. It is also naturally odour resistant, which helps on a multi-day hut trip. It is also a certified carbon neutral product.

Care

Machine wash cold on a gentle or wool cycle with a wool detergent; no fabric softener, bleach or wringing. Dry it flat in the shade, or cool tumble dry. If it needs it, iron inside out on the wool setting, keeping the iron off prints and trims. Do not dry clean.
