Trisuits & Tri Shorts

Trisuits are the race kit you wear from the swim start to the finish chute, with a thin chamois for the bike and fabric that dries as you run. Our current stock is the two-piece route: the Orca Athlex Tri Short with a 4 mm chamois and back pockets, paired with the top of your choice. Below is how to pick tri kit that won't chafe.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A trisuit or tri short is designed to be worn without underwear, because extra layers hold water and cause chafing. The chamois sits against your skin. Many women wear a sports bra under a tri top or one-piece for support, and an anti-chafe balm helps on long races.

A one-piece trisuit is slightly faster and has no waistband to roll or gap. Two-piece tri kit is easier to size if your top and bottom are different sizes, and handier for toilet stops on a long-course race. Both use a thin chamois for the bike.

Yes, that's how it's meant to work. Put your trisuit on first and your wetsuit over the top. At T1 you peel the wetsuit off and ride in the trisuit. Choose a trisuit without bulky seams at the shoulders so it sits flat under the neoprene.

How to choose trisuits and tri shorts

A tri suit has three jobs: swim without drag, ride without a saddle sore, run without chafing. That decides what to look for.

• Chamois. Thin and dense, not a thick cycling pad that soaks up water. The Athlex Tri Short uses a 4 mm Italian Tri-Tech chamois that dries quickly off the bike.

• Fit. Snug everywhere. Loose fabric holds water in the swim and rubs on the run. Measure chest, waist and hips against the product size chart.

• One-piece or two-piece. A one-piece trisuit has no gap at the waist and is quickest in transition. A tri short and top gives you more freedom to mix sizes and is easier for toilet stops on a long race.

• Pockets. Back pockets carry gels for the bike and run.

Swimming in your tri kit

Most Australian age-group races allow wetsuits when the water is cool. Your trisuit goes on underneath, so you strip the wetsuit at T1 and ride straight out. Compare Orca's Athlex and Apex triathlon wetsuits.

When the water is too warm for wetsuits, a swimskin goes over your trisuit instead. The Orca Apex Swimskin (men's and women's, on our wetsuits page) cuts friction in the water and is legal where wetsuits aren't. Check your race's rules either way.

Queensland heat and race day

On a hot Noosa or Gold Coast race, fabric that moves sweat matters as much as speed. The Athlex Tri Short's Vapour-cool fabric is built to evaporate sweat. Pair it with a light, breathable top and a visor, and carry electrolytes for the run. Race belts, anti-chafe balm and transition bags are in triathlon gear.
