Frequently Asked Questions
For a first sprint race you need goggles, a swim cap (usually supplied by the race), a bike and helmet, running shoes and a race belt for your number. A wetsuit helps in cool water. A trisuit saves changing in transition, but any swimwear you can ride and run in will do.
Not always. Races set wetsuit rules by water temperature, so check your event guide. In cool water a wetsuit adds warmth and buoyancy. In warm water you swim in your trisuit. Our triathlon wetsuits and trisuits sit in their own collections.
It depends on the race. Many events limit neoprene accessories, and some allow them only when the water is very cold. Check your race rules before you buy for an event. For training swims in cold water they make a big difference to how long you can stay in.
A saddle mount like the Topeak Tri-Backup Pro V holds one or two bottles behind you, out of the wind, along with race spares. It suits saddles with V-shaped rails. Add Topeak Tri-Cages to hold the bottles, and set it up before race week.
Triathlon gear by leg
• Swim: Orca Killa goggles, silicone and neoprene swim caps, a thermal hood and a hi-vis hood, open water gloves, swim socks and Hydro Booties (3 mm neoprene with a Thermal X lining). For training, theTriathlon gear by leg
• Swim: Orca Killa goggles, silicone and neoprene swim caps, a thermal hood and a hi-vis hood, open water gloves, swim socks and Hydro Booties (3 mm neoprene with a Thermal X lining). For training, the Safety Buoy is a 9-litre hi-vis orange tow float with a watertight compartment for your keys.
• Bike: the Topeak Tri-Backup Pro V clamps to V-shaped saddle rails, carries one or two bottles and race spares, and weighs 97 g. Add the Tri-Cage or Tri-Cage 2 to hold the bottles.
• Run: Orca race belts, with or without a zipped pocket, hold your number without pinning it through your trisuit. Spin the belt from back to front as you rack the bike.
• Transition and after: the Orca Transition Bag (52 L) has a helmet compartment, a waterproof section for a wet wetsuit and a separate shoe compartment. We also stock a changing mat, mesh bags, a poncho towel and Gear Aid Revivex wetsuit shampoo.
Triathlon accessories for comfort
Chafing ends more races than people admit. Chamois Buttr anti-chafe creams are made for the chamois pad in your trisuit, and also work anywhere skin rubs on skin or clothing, such as inner thighs or under a race belt. Try it in training, not for the first time on race day.
Triathlon equipment for Australian races
Many Australian races start in cool water, from winter swims in Victoria and Tasmania to early-season lake starts. A neoprene cap, booties and gloves keep you swimming longer when the water bites, but check your race rules before using them in an event. In Queensland and the north, heat matters more: carry two bottles behind the saddle and plan your electrolytes. The big pieces sit in their own collections: triathlon wetsuits and trisuits.
