Description
The Topeak Tri-Backup Pro V is a rear saddle mount for triathlon bikes. It clamps to the V section of your saddle rails, carries one or two bottles up to 750 cc each along with your race spares, and takes up to 2.5 kg. The pressed aluminium frame weighs 97 g, and its shape forms a hook, so the bike hangs from the transition rack by the saddle.
What it fits
The Tri-Backup Pro V is made for saddles where the rails narrow into a V behind the seat clamp, which is where it bolts on. It works with CrMo, titanium and carbon rails, and comes with separate rail clamps for standard and carbon rails. If your rails run parallel all the way back, Topeak's Tri-Backup Pro I is the version for you.
Behind the saddle it builds out into a full race setup. Add one or two bottle cages, including Topeak's Tri-Cage, and it takes the rest of the Tri-BackUp and Ninja family:
- Tri-BackUp Air Station, TubeBag and TireBag
- Ninja TC Road, Ninja Pouch+ Road and Ninja CO2+
That means a spare tube, CO2 and a couple of bottles for a long course day, from the Busselton bike leg to a hot Cairns Ironman, all sitting out of the wind behind you rather than on the frame.
How it attaches
Four rail clamps and threadlock-treated bolts fix the Tri-Backup Pro V to the saddle rails, and the recommended torque is 3.5 Nm. Tighten the bolts evenly, side to side, so the mount sits square. Two angle positions let you tilt the bottles to suit your setup, and the bottle cage extensions and anchors in the box let you position the cages where you want them. Set it up in the garage before race week and it is one less job in transition.
Weight and material
Pressed aluminium, 97 g, and 11.8 x 8 x 6.9 cm. It is a small, sturdy bracket that carries a 2.5 kg load behind the saddle and saves time at T1 and T2, because racking the bike by the saddle hook is quicker than wrestling a wheel into a rack.
