Frequently Asked Questions
A comfortable day pack, enough water for the conditions, sun protection, a warm layer and rain jacket, a head torch in case you finish after dark, and a basic first aid kit. On rough or steep tracks, a pair of hiking poles helps on the descents.
Add a larger hiking backpack (40 L or more), a tent, a sleeping bag rated for the overnight low, a sleeping mat, a stove with a pot, food, and a way to treat water. A small repair kit with tape and a needle is worth its weight.
A common guide is to keep a loaded pack around 20 per cent of your body weight or less. The biggest savings come from the big three: pack, tent and sleeping bag. Water is heavy too, so a filter lets you carry less and refill on the way.
How to choose hiking gear
Work out the trip first, then the gear. How to choose hiking gear

• Day walks. A day pack of 15–30 L, water (a hydration pack or bottles), a head torch in case you finish late, and a small first aid kit.
• Overnight and multi-day. A hiking backpack of 40 L or more, a lightweight tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat, a stove and pot, and a water filter so you can refill from creeks and tanks.
• Steep or rough tracks. Hiking poles take load off your knees on descents.
Carry a repair kit on any trip longer than a day. A strip of Tenacious Tape fixes a torn tent, jacket or mat, and a compass is still worth packing even if you navigate by phone. Batteries go flat; a compass does not.
If you are new to multi-day walking, buy the pack last. Get your tent, sleeping bag and mat first, then choose a pack that fits them with room for food and water. It is much easier to fit a pack to your gear than the other way round.
Hiking gear for Australian conditions
Tassie wet, Queensland humidity and the dry centre all ask for different things. On the Overland Track, plan for rain and cold any month of the year: a pack raincover and a warm sleeping bag matter. On the Larapinta, water is the issue, so carry more capacity and a filter. In the Aussie Alps season (June to September), add warmer layers and check that your mat and bag suit the cold.
