Description

Gear Aid Aquaseal +SR Shoe Repair is a clear urethane adhesive for boots and shoes, sold in a 28 g tube. It glues a peeling sole back on, seals a lifting rand and builds up a worn heel, then cures to a flexible rubber that bends with the shoe and keeps water out. Older hands will know it as Freesole.

It bonds to leather, suede, rubber, neoprene, canvas and nylon, and once cured it handles use from -29 to 82 °C. It is a slow, permanent repair rather than an instant glue: the boot needs to sit overnight, so it is a job for home or a rest day, not for the side of the track ten minutes before you walk on.

How to use it

Brush off all the dirt. Scuff smooth surfaces with sandpaper, then wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. On waxed leather boots, buff back to bare leather where the glue has to grip.
For a loose sole, spread a generous layer on the inside faces, press the sole to the upper and wipe away what squeezes out. Strap or tape it shut for 8 to 12 hours.
For a crack in a rubber boot, stuff the boot with newspaper, mask around the crack and spread the adhesive 13 mm past the damage. Pull the tape off after 30 minutes.
For a worn heel, make a dam around the edge with clear tape, fill the gap and keep the shoe level.

Most repairs cure in 8 to 12 hours. Rands need 24 hours, and a thick heel rebuild can take 24 to 48 hours. Work somewhere between 16 and 38 °C with some humidity in the air. Wear disposable gloves, and clean up wet adhesive with rubbing alcohol.

Shelf life and storage

To keep a part-used tube alive, push the adhesive up to the neck, wipe the thread, put a small piece of foil over the opening and screw the cap on over it. Seal the tube in a plastic bag and store it in the freezer.
