Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on how you walk. For solo trips, the LifeStraw Peak Solo or Peak Squeeze are light and fast. For two to four people, a gravity filter like the Katadyn BeFree Gravity 10L or LifeStraw Peak Gravity saves time at camp. For a base camp or big group, the Katadyn Drip Ceradyn.
No. The microfilters we stock remove bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and sediment, but not viruses or dissolved chemicals. Australian backcountry water mostly carries bacteria and protozoa. If a source could carry viruses, boil the water as well as filtering it.
It depends on the filter and how dirty the water is. Katadyn rates the BeFree at up to 1,000 L and the Drip Ceradyn at up to 150,000 L. LifeStraw rates the Go 2.0 membrane at up to 4,000 L, while its carbon filter lasts about 100 L. Murky water shortens filter life.
For the BeFree, shake or swish the filter in clean water when the flow slows. LifeStraw Peak filters can be backflushed. Ceramic filters like the Drip Ceradyn are cleaned with the supplied pad, with no soap. Always let filters dry fully before storing them.
How to choose a hiking water filter

• Solo, light and fast. LifeStraw Peak Solo screws onto a standard 28 mm bottle and LifeStraw says it fills a 1 L bottle in about 20 seconds. The Peak Squeeze is a 650 ml or 1 L collapsible bottle with the filter built in, at 110 g. Drink through it, or squeeze clean water into another bottle.
• Everyday and travel. The LifeStraw Go 2.0 bottle (650 ml or 1 L) has a membrane filter rated to 4,000 L plus a carbon filter for taste, which needs changing about every 100 L. Insulated stainless steel versions are also in the range.
• Groups. A gravity filter does the work while you set up camp. The Katadyn BeFree Gravity 10L runs at up to 2 L a minute and weighs about 284 g. The LifeStraw Peak Gravity comes in 3 L, 8 L and an 8 L + 8 L kit.
• Base camps. The Katadyn Drip Filter Ceradyn uses three ceramic elements, puts out about 4 L an hour with no pump, and is rated to 150,000 L.
We also carry spares: BeFree Softflasks, BeFree replacement cartridges and carbon, Vario ceramic prefilter discs and the Pocket ceramic cartridge.
Camping water filter or purifier?
Every filter in this range is a microfilter. It removes bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and sediment. Microfilters don't remove viruses, dissolved chemicals or salt. For most Australian creeks and tanks, the risk is bacteria and protozoa, so a filter is the right tool. If you think a source could carry viruses (downstream of a town or a busy campground), boil the water as well. Never filter salt or brackish water.
Water in Australian conditions
Water is the hard part of a lot of Aussie walks. On the Larapinta or the Great North Walk you may be filling from tanks and waterholes, and summer heat means you drink more than you expect. Murky water clogs filters faster, so let it settle or use a bandana as a prefilter. In the Alps in winter, never let a wet filter freeze: ice can damage the fibres without any sign. Sleep with it in your sleeping bag.
