Frequently Asked Questions
For single-day sport or multi-pitch routes, 24 to 30 litres holds a light rack, layers, water and lunch, with the rope strapped on top. For alpine routes, glacier travel and overnight approaches, step up to 34 to 44 litres, such as the Deuter Guide 34+6, or the 44+6, which also takes a stove, with crampons strapped outside.
Yes, if it is an alpine pack. The Deuter Guide range is narrow, and the hip fins or waist belt stow or come off so they do not fight your harness. Fit it over the layers you climb in, with a harness on, and check you can still tip your head back to look up the route.
A crag pack, like the Deuter Gravity Motion, is built to carry everything to the base of the route and open wide once you are there. An alpine pack, like the Guide Lite 24, is slim enough to climb in, with a rope strap, axe attachments and a helmet holder on the outside.
All four Deuter Guide and Guide Lite packs take a bladder up to 3 litres, and the Mammut Trion Nordwand 28 Women takes a hydration system. The Gravity Motion and the Eiger Nordwand 28 Women do not list a bladder sleeve, so carry bottles with those.
How to choose a climbing backpack
• Crag pack or alpine pack:How to choose a climbing backpack
• Crag pack or alpine pack: a crag pack gets your kit to the base of the route and stays there. The Gravity Motion is 40 L and unzips the full length of the back panel, so the padded back stays out of the dirt. An alpine pack climbs with you: slim, tall, with a hip belt that stows or comes off so it sits over a harness.
• Size: 24 to 30 L covers a single-day multi-pitch: rack, layers, water and lunch, with the rope under the top strap. The 34+6 and 44+6 add room for alpine routes and glacier days, with a lid that lifts for 6 L more; the 44+6 takes a stove, and crampons strap outside.
• Carry: the Guide 34+6 and Guide 44+6 use a backplate and flexi spring steel frame, with hip fins that carry a gear loop and ice clipper slot. The Guide Lite 24 and 30 have a padded, ventilated back and a waist belt or hip fins that stow or detach.
• Rope and tools: every Guide has a rope strap, ice axe attachments on both sides and a detachable mesh helmet holder, and takes a bladder up to 3 L.
• Fit: the Deuter packs are one size for back lengths of 44 to 54 cm, or climbers about 170 to 195 cm tall.

From Frog Buttress to the Southern Alps
For single pitches at Frog Buttress or Arapiles, a crag pack makes sense. On a long multi-pitch in the Blue Mountains, carry a Guide Lite 24 up the route with water, a shell and a head torch. For winter on the Main Range or a trip to New Zealand's Southern Alps, the Guide 34+6 or 44+6 carries the rope and two axes outside. Want a bladder that fits? See climbing hydration packs. Walking rather than climbing? Try hiking backpacks.
