Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if it is a climbing pack that takes a bladder. A slim pack such as the Deuter Guide Lite 24 sits close to your back, and the drinking tube lets you drink at belays without taking the pack off. Keep the load light on harder pitches, and clip the tube so it cannot snag.

For a crag day or a short multi-pitch, 2 litres is usually enough. On hot days or long alpine routes, carry 3 litres. Every pack on this page takes up to 3 litres. The CamelBak Crux and USWE Elite come in sizes from 1.5 to 3 litres.

No. The Deuter Guide packs and the Mammut Trion Nordwand 28 Women have a sleeve and port for a bladder, but the bladder is sold separately. Add a CamelBak Crux Reservoir or a USWE Elite bladder in the size you need.

How to choose a climbing hydration pack

Start with the day you climb. A single-pitch crag day or a short multi-pitch needs 24 to 30 litres: the Deuter Guide Lite 24 (670 g) or Guide Lite 30 (760 g) carries a rack, belay jacket, lunch and a full bladder, with the rope strapped on top. Long alpine routes and glacier days need 34 to 50 litres for crampons and layers: the Guide 34+6 or Guide 44+6 has a framed back for heavier loads.

Then check the fit with a harness on. A slim waist belt that comes off, like the Guide Lite's, stays clear of your gear loops.

Bladders that fit

Every pack here takes a bladder of up to 3 litres. Choose the CamelBak Crux Reservoir in 1.5, 2 or 3 L, or the USWE Elite bladder, which unplugs at the base and turns inside out for cleaning. On a hot day at Frog Buttress or the Blue Mountains, 2 to 3 litres is a sensible start.

Climbing packs we stock

• Deuter Guide Lite 24 and 30: light, tall, narrow packs for multi-pitch and the approach.

• Deuter Guide 34+6 and 44+6: alpine packs with a backplate and spring steel frame for heavier loads.

• Mammut Trion Nordwand 28 Women: a 28 L roll-top alpine pack cut for women, at 810 g.
