Frequently Asked Questions
For a half-day walk, 13 to 17 litres holds water, a layer and snacks. For a full day, 20 to 27 litres fits a 3 L bladder, rain jacket, warm layer, lunch and first aid kit. Choose 30 to 35 litres for long alpine days, winter walks or a light hut overnight.
SL is Deuter's women's fit. SL packs have a shorter back length and a harness shaped for the female body, so the hip fins sit on your hips and the shoulder straps clear your chest. EL models, like the Futura 29 EL, are built long for tall walkers.
Many are. The Futura 27 and Telatie 26 take a 3 L bladder and the AC Lite 14 SL takes 2 L, each in its own sleeve. Check the product page for each pack, because commuter and kids' packs are not all set up for a bladder.
Pack fabric sheds light rain, but seams and zips leak in a downpour. A cover keeps the pack dry; the AC Lite 14 SL includes one, and the Deuter Raincover I fits packs from 20 to 35 litres. Line the inside with a dry bag for anything that must stay dry.
How to choose a hiking daypack
• Size: 13 to 17 litres covers a half-day walk; 20 to 27 litres a full day with a warm layer and 3 litres of water; 30 to 35 litres a big alpine day or a hut overnight. How to choose a hiking daypack
• Size: 13 to 17 litres covers a half-day walk; 20 to 27 litres a full day with a warm layer and 3 litres of water; 30 to 35 litres a big alpine day or a hut overnight.
• Back ventilation: in Queensland humidity, a mesh back that holds the pack off you makes a big difference. The Futura 27 uses Deuter's Aircomfort back and takes a 3 L bladder.
• Light and fast: the Speed Lite 21 is 470 g. The Speed Lite Pro packs (17 SL to 25) have vest-style straps with bottles on your chest.
• Women's fit: SL models have a shorter back and straps shaped for women: Futura 25 SL, Futura 21 SL, AC Lite 14 SL, Telatie 24 SL and Speed Lite Pro 17 SL and 23 SL. Tall walkers should look at the Futura 29 EL.
• Easy access: the Telatie 26 opens from the top or through a front zip, and is hydration compatible.
Technical and spare daypacks
The Nemo Resolve 35L, in men's and women's fits, and the Resolve 15L suit big days and scrambles. The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day Pack (20 L) stuffs into its own attached sack, a spare bag for travel or the summit push from camp.
Everyday and kids' packs
For the commute or uni, the Deuter Giga, Stepout and UP Stockholm carry a laptop, and the light Gogo takes folders and lunch. For kids, the Deuter Pico (5 L) suits two to three-year-olds, and the Kikki and Waldfuchs come along to kindy and on family walks.
Australian conditions
Afternoon storms roll in fast in the ranges and in Tassie, so carry a pack cover: the Deuter Raincover I fits 20 to 35 L packs. For overnight and multi-day walks, step up to hiking backpacks; to drink on the move, see hydration packs.
Why buy from Oz Backcountry
Free shipping Australia-wide over $150 (T&Cs apply). Most Deuter and Nemo packs ship direct from the supplier, so allow a little longer; Sea to Summit packs go out from our Helensvale warehouse.
