Utilion 30

The Deuter Utilion 30 is an all-rounder roll-top backpack in recycled polyester that opens from the top and from the back panel, so it packs like a suitcase and carries like a daypack. It is a work bag on Monday and a weekend-away bag on Friday.

Who it's for

Commuters and travellers who want one bag for the laptop, the gym gear and a short trip. It suits a train commute into the Brisbane CBD, a work trip to Sydney, or a weekend in the Byron hinterland.

Capacity, and what actually fits

30 litres holds a laptop up to 16 inches in the padded organiser sleeve, a tablet and documents beside it, two days of clothes, and shoes in the lower section kept apart by the zip-out divider. Unroll the top for extra volume when you are bringing more home than you left with. The pack measures 51 x 31 x 18 cm and carries a recommended 4-8 kg.

How it carries

The Airstripes back has padded strips with ventilation channels between them under breathable 3D mesh, so air moves across most of your back on a warm walk from the station. A trapezoid lumbar pad spreads the load and leaves your hips free to move. Padded, ergonomically shaped shoulder straps and a removable 2-way sternum strap keep it close. A waist belt is available separately for heavier days.

Fitting it

The Utilion 30 suits back lengths of 38-54 cm, which covers most adults from about 158 cm to 195 cm. Adjust the shoulder straps so the lumbar pad sits in the small of your back.

Access and organisation

Load through the roll-top, which clips shut with a buckle, or unzip the back panel to lay the main compartment open. The zip-in organiser lifts out with your laptop and documents in it. A zipped front compartment and two stretch side pockets hold a bottle, keys and the things you grab on the move.
