Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on ride length. For racing, a minimal 2 litre pack like the USWE Race 2.0. For trail rides, a 9 to 12 litre pack such as the USWE MTB Hydro 9L or CamelBak Lobo 9. For enduro, a protector pack like the USWE Flow. Whatever you choose, a harness that stops bounce matters most.
1.5 litres covers a ride of an hour or two. 2 litres suits most trail rides. Go to 3 litres for long or hot days in Queensland summer or when there is nowhere to refill. The USWE Elite bladder comes in four sizes, so you can match it to your pack and the day.
A vest such as the USWE Rush 8L or CamelBak Chase Adventure 8 sits higher with pockets on the chest, so you can eat and drink without stopping. A pack carries more gear behind you. Racers and gravel riders often prefer a vest; trail riders carrying a pump and jacket usually go for a pack.
Rinse it with warm water after every ride and hang it open to dry. Every few weeks, scrub with a brush and mild detergent or bicarb soda. The USWE Elite bladder turns inside out, which makes this much easier. Store it dry, or in the freezer, to slow mould.

• Up to two hours or racing: a 2 litre pack with little else. The USWE Race 2.0 weighs 230 g; the USWE Outback 2 is a simpler 1.5 litre option at $135.
• Half-day trail rides: 2 to 3 litres of water plus space for a pump, tube and jacket. The USWE MTB Hydro 9L, CamelBak Lobo 9 (also in a women's fit) and CamelBak M.U.L.E. Evo 12 fit here.
• Big days and enduro: USWE Shred 16L and 25L carry armour and a helmet. The Flow 16L and 25L have a CE Level 1 SAS-TEC back protector built in, and the Watt 25L has a battery compartment for e-MTB.
• Fit: a pack that moves on descents gets taken off. Look for a chest harness or a waist strap. USWE's 4-point harness is the most stable we sell.
Cycling hydration vests and waist packs
A cycling hydration vest puts food and phone on your chest. The USWE Rush 8L carries 2 litres of water with five front pockets, and the CamelBak Chase Adventure 8 holds a 2 litre Crux reservoir for 400 g. If you'd rather keep your back clear, the USWE Zulo waist pack comes in 2L and 6L. For dirt bikes, USWE's Moto Hydro and Outlander Moto packs go over armour.
Riding in Australian heat
A summer loop at Nerang, Mount Joyce or the You Yangs will empty two bottle cages well before you're done. Carry 2 to 3 litres in a pack and keep bike bottles for electrolytes. Spare bladders such as the USWE Elite and the Ogio replacement bladder let you swap a stale one out. Want hydration on the bike rather than on you? See bikepacking bags.
