Frequently Asked Questions
For a two or three hour trail ride, 8 litres fits a 2 L bladder, a tube, pump, multi-tool, a shell and food, like the Deuter Race 8. For a full day, 12 to 16 litres fits a 3 L bladder and more layers. Choose 20 litres or more for touring.
They overlap. Most of our Deuter bike backpacks have room for a bladder, but they are built around carrying tools, layers and food as well. A dedicated hydration pack puts water first and suits short, hot rides. If you mostly ride for an hour or two, a hydration pack may be all you need.
Yes. The Deuter Junior Bike is a scaled-down riding pack for kids about 130 to 168 cm tall. It holds 8 litres, takes a 2 L bladder, has a ventilated back and weighs 350 g, so it suits family trail rides, pump-track sessions and the ride to school.
How to choose a bike backpack
• Size for the ride:How to choose a bike backpack
• Size for the ride: 5 to 8 litres carries a tube, tools, food and a shell for a two or three hour ride; 12 to 16 litres adds a 3 L bladder and more layers for a full day; 20 to 25 litres is for touring and commuting.
• Water: most of these packs have room for a bladder: a 2 L in the Race 8 and Junior Bike, 3 L in the Race 12, Race 16, Bike I Lite 16 and Bike I 20. For a pack built around water, see MTB hydration packs.
• Fit and carry: a riding pack should hug your back and not shift when you stand on the pedals. Deuter's Race packs are cut close and light; the Race 12 weighs 560 g.
• Tools and helmet: the Bike I Lite 16 has a tool organiser and helmet clips; the Bike I 20 has a mesh helmet holder, so you can lock up and keep walking.
The Deuter bike backpacks we stock

• Bike I Lite 16 and Bike I 20: day-ride and touring packs; the Bike I 20 doubles as a walking pack, with a pole attachment.
• Trans Alpine 24: 24 litres for multi-day mountain bike tours, with room for a change of clothes and a rain shell.
• Xberg 25: clips to your pannier rack for the ride, then flips to a backpack at the door; the roll-top adds 5 litres.
• Junior Bike: an 8 litre, 350 g pack for kids about 130 to 168 cm tall.
Riding packs for Australian trails
On a hot morning at Nerang or Mt Stromlo, a light Race pack with a full bladder beats bottles alone. For a multi-day lap of the Munda Biddi or the Tasmanian Trail, the Trans Alpine 24 carries the extras. If you would rather carry the load on the bike, see bikepacking bags.
