The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Day Pack is a 22 L day pack made from 30D siliconised CORDURA nylon, with a roll-top closure and taped seams, that stuffs into its own attached sack. It is the spare pack you carry on a trip where the afternoon storm is a fair bet.
Who it's for
Walkers who leave the big pack at camp and want something for the side trip: the climb up Mount Ossa off the Overland Track, a day out from a base in the Warrumbungles. Travellers who want a daypack that disappears into the luggage until it is needed. Anyone heading to the wet tropics with a camera and a dry jumper to protect.
For paddling, or anywhere a pack could end up under water, we'd put you in a Big River dry bag instead.
Capacity, and what actually fits
22 L in a pack that measures 30 x 22 x 48 cm. That is a rain jacket, a warm layer, lunch, two litres of water and a first aid kit, with room over the top for a camera. The elasticised lacing on the front holds a wet jacket outside the bag or cinches a half-empty pack down so it does not flap.
How it carries
The shoulder straps are reinforced so they sit flat under load instead of bunching into a cord. They are not padded, so keep it to about 7 kg for anything longer than a short carry, and pack something soft against your back.
Fitting it
One size, with no frame and no torso length to measure. Load it, put it on and snug the shoulder straps down until the pack sits high on your back.
Access and organisation
The double roll-top is non-wicking, so water does not track along the fold into the bag, and every seam is double stitched then sealed with PU tape. The fabric has a hydrostatic head above 2000 mm. Roll the top down, clip it, and heavy rain stays on the outside.
Weight
110 g, packed into a stuff sack of 5.3 x 14.3 x 19 cm with a small aluminium carabiner to clip it to your main pack. At that weight there is no argument for leaving it behind.
