Stepout 22

The Deuter Stepout 22 is a clean-lined roll-top pack that does the commute, the lecture and the weekend. Laptop in its own sleeve, folders flat against your back, and a roll-top that opens up when the gym gear or the shopping needs to come home too.

Who it's for

Commuters, students and city walkers who want one pack for the week. Deuter rate it five out of five for everyday lifestyle use and four for office and school or university. The recommended 3-6 kg load is a laptop, a folder, lunch, a bottle and a jacket.

Capacity, and what actually fits

22 litres holds a laptop up to 15 inch, a tablet and A4 documents in the organiser pockets, lunch and a light jacket, with the bottle in its own inside holder. Unroll the top and there is room for a change of clothes or a few groceries on the way home. The pack measures 46 x 27 x 21 cm.

How it carries

The Airstripes back puts two padded strips against you with a ventilation channel and 3D mesh between them, so air reaches most of your back on a hot walk from the station. Perforated, padded shoulder straps and a 2-way adjustable sternum strap keep it comfortable, and the folder-sized main compartment holds the weight close to your back. A removable waist belt steadies it on a bike.

Fitting it

The Stepout 22 comes in one size with a wide range: back lengths of 38-54 cm, for people around 158-195 cm tall. Wear it high, with the straps snug so a heavy laptop does not drag the pack away from your back.

Access and organisation

The laptop compartment has its own zip at the side, so the laptop comes out without opening the roll-top. A cell phone pocket on the side, against the back, lets you grab your phone one-handed without taking the pack off. Inside are a document compartment, organiser pockets for a tablet and papers, a valuables pocket, a bottle holder and a key clip, and stretch side pockets take an umbrella or a second bottle.

Weight

845 g for a 22 litre pack with full laptop padding, a structured organiser and a ventilated harness. It is built for a daily load you carry for years, and it rolls up small to pack inside a suitcase when you travel.

Looking after it

The body is 600D and 300D recycled polyester with a DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and the pack is bluepass and Green Button certified. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.
