Who it's for

Fast day hikers and trail walkers. Deuter rate it five out of five for hiking and four for trekking, and the recommended load of 2-5 kg is a half or full day out: a lap of the Springbrook waterfalls, or a summer ridge walk at Mount Buffalo. Capacity, and what actually fits

21 litres takes two 1 L bottles in the side pockets, a rain shell and a light fleece, lunch, a first aid kit and a head torch, with the mesh front pocket for a wet jacket. The pack measures 46 x 28 x 18 cm, so it stays slim on narrow, overgrown tracks. Compression straps on top cinch it down when it is half full.

How it carries

The Lite back system strips the carry down to padded back panels that hug your shape, so the load sits close and does not sway when you step up rocks. Wide, perforated shoulder straps are ventilated right through, and a lightly elasticated sternum strap adjusts two ways for height. A detachable waist belt keeps the pack steady on a descent, and comes off when you want the lightest carry.

The Speed Lite 21 comes in one size for back lengths of 44-54 cm, which Deuter match to walkers around 170-195 cm tall. With a load this light, snug the shoulder straps first, then clip the sternum strap at a comfortable height.

Access and organisation

The main compartment opens on a zip that runs right around the top, so you can see and reach everything without unpacking. A zipped top pocket holds keys on their clip, a phone and snacks. Mesh front and side pockets take a wet jacket, bottles and sunscreen, and there is a wet compartment inside.
