Description

The Deuter Guide Lite 30 is a stripped-back alpine pack in recycled ripstop, built to carry a rope, two axes and a helmet at 760 g. It is a pack for the approach and the climb, slim enough to wear over a harness.

Who it's for

Climbers and mountaineers. Deuter rate it five out of five for both climbing and mountain climbing, and three for ski touring, snowshoeing and hiking. It suits a long multi-pitch day at Frog Buttress, a winter ascent on the Main Range, or a trip to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park where the rope and crampons ride on the outside.

Capacity, and what actually fits

30 litres takes a rack, harness, belay jacket, shell, lunch and a 3 L bladder, with a rope across the top under the rope strap. The pack measures 68 x 37 x 20 cm and carries a recommended 6-10 kg. Side compression straps pull a half-empty load in tight against your back.

How it carries

The Alpine back system has padded sections with ventilation channels under breathable mesh, giving a close, stable fit for moving carefully on technical ground. ActiveFit shoulder straps, stabiliser straps and a one-handed sternum buckle keep it centred, and the slim hip fins carry the load on the walk in, then stow away so the pack sits cleanly over a harness.

Fitting it

One size, for back lengths of 44-54 cm and climbers roughly 170-195 cm tall. Fit it with the layers you will climb in, and check you can tip your head back to look up the route with the pack loaded.

Access and organisation

The top opening closes with a drawcord under a flap, which still works when the pack is stuffed full. A zipped top pocket and a phone pocket hold small things, and inside there is a wet compartment.

  • Top-loader with drawcord and flap closure; zipped top pocket
  • Rope strap; ice axe attachment on both sides
  • Detachable mesh helmet holder
  • Stowable hip fins; side compression straps
  • Hydration compatible, up to 3 L
  • Phone pocket, wet compartment, glasses stow, key clip, safety whistle, SOS label

Weight

760 g for a 30 litre pack with full alpine carry. On a long approach and a longer climb, that is weight you never have to haul up the route.

Looking after it

The ripstop body resists abrasion from rock and protects the contents from dust and moisture. It is bluepass and Green Button certified, finished without intentionally added PFAS.
