Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the model and how dirty the water is. LifeStraw rate the Go 2.0 membrane at up to 4,000 litres, but its carbon filter lasts about 100 litres, roughly two months. The Peak Solo is rated to 2,000 litres. Backflush Peak filters when the flow drops, and never let a wet filter freeze.
The LifeStraw bottles and Peak filters we stock use membrane microfilters, and none of the ones in stock claim to remove viruses. The Go bottles list bacteria and parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and the Peak Solo and Peak Squeeze list bacteria and parasites. If a water source could carry viruses, boil it or use a purifier as well as filtering.
For a solo walker, the Peak Squeeze is one 110 g item that stores and filters water, and the Peak Solo screws onto a bottle you already carry. For two or more people, the Peak Gravity filters a 3 L or 8 L bag while you set up camp. The Go bottles suit travel and everyday use.
The LifeStraw range we stock
• Peak Solo: the Peak Solo screws onto most bottles with a standard 28 mm thread. LifeStraw say it fills a 1 L bottle in 20 seconds and filters up to 2,000 L.
• Peak Squeeze: the Peak Squeeze is a 650 ml or 1 L collapsible bottle with the filter built in, at 110 g. Drink through it, or squeeze clean water into another bottle.
• Peak Gravity: the Peak Gravity comes in 3 L, 8 L and an 8 L + 8 L kit with a clean-water storage bag. The filter also comes off to use as a straw.
• Go filter bottles: the Go 2.0 in BPA-free plastic (650 ml or 1 L), the Go 2.0 Insulated Stainless Steel in 500 ml, 700 ml and 1 L, and the Go Series 500 ml steel bottle. The filter sits in the straw.
What a LifeStraw filter removes
LifeStraw's descriptions for the Go bottles list bacteria including E. coli and Salmonella, parasites including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, microplastics, sand, dirt and cloudiness. The Go carbon stage cuts chlorine, odours and organic chemical matter. The Peak Solo and Peak Squeeze remove bacteria, parasites, microplastics, sand and silt. None of these claim to stop viruses. If a source could carry them, boil the water or use a purifier as well.
Which LifeStraw for which trip
Day walks and trail runs: Peak Solo or Peak Squeeze. A group at camp: Peak Gravity. Travel and everyday tap water: a Go bottle. On the Larapinta or the Great North Walk you may fill from tanks and waterholes, so carry more capacity than you think. In the Alps in winter, never let a wet filter freeze; keep it in your sleeping bag. Compare every brand in Hiking & Camping Water Filters.
