The Katadyn BeFree Softflask is the soft, squeezable flask that a BeFree AC filter screws into, sold on its own. Pick one up to replace a flask that has worn out or been punctured, or to carry a second one so you can fill both at the creek and keep moving. It comes in two sizes: 1 L in black or slate blue, and 0.5 L in slate blue.

What it is

A replacement flask for the Katadyn BeFree AC filter system. It is the flask only: there is no filter in the box, so it needs the BeFree filter you already own.

Who it's for

BeFree owners. If your flask has sprung a pinhole after a season stuffed in a running vest, or you want more water on the long dry stretches of the Larapinta or the Great North Walk, a spare flask is the simple way to keep the filter you already trust in service. Two flasks means one to drink through and one full in the pack.

Using it with your filter

  1. Fill the flask with fresh water from the clearest source you can find: a flowing creek, a lake or a tap. Never salt or brackish water.
  2. Wipe the outside of the flask dry.
  3. Screw the BeFree filter on clockwise until it seals tightly, taking care not to cross-thread it, because a crooked thread can let unfiltered water past.
  4. Flip the cap open and squeeze, or tip it up and drink.

The BeFree filter does not remove viruses, so where they are a concern, treat the water as well.

Looking after it

Rinse the flask after a trip and let it air dry completely, with the filter off, before you pack it away. A dry flask stays fresh between trips and is ready the next time you head out.
