Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Neoprene Patch Iron-On is a black sheet of stretch repair fabric for neoprene gear, 25.4 x 15.2 cm, that you cut to shape and bond on with a household iron. It fixes fin cuts, fingernail tears and blown seams in wetsuits, waders, booties and gloves, and it stretches with the suit, so a patched knee still bends.

What it fixes

  • Tears, holes and nicks in wetsuits, springsuits and steamers.
  • Splits in neoprene waders, booties, gloves and hoods.
  • Seams that are starting to pull apart.
  • Knees, elbows and underarms that are wearing thin, as a reinforcing panel.

The patch bonds to neoprene, rubber, Lycra, spandex and latex, which takes in rash vests and drysuits as well. Between its nylon face and the adhesive sits a layer Gear Aid call BARRITEX, there to take abrasion. One sheet cuts into a lot of small patches.

This is a home repair. It needs a full-size iron, a firm flat surface and mains power, so it is not a beach-side fix. A big hole or a gouge needs filling with a piece of neoprene first.

How to use it

  1. Wash the gear in fresh water and dry it completely.
  2. Set the iron to the acrylic setting, which is low or delicate on many irons. No steam, and not a travel iron. Never go above 135 °C.
  3. Lay the garment on a firm, flat surface. For a sleeve or leg, slide a board inside so you are pressing one layer.
  4. Cut the patch to overlap the damage by 19 mm all round. Rounding the corners helps it stay down.
  5. Place the patch coating side down and cover it with the whole sheet of heat shielding paper from the pack. Do not cut the paper.
  6. Press with firm, even pressure for 10 seconds. Lift, turn the iron and press for another 10 seconds.
  7. Let it cool for a few minutes, then check the edges. Repeat with more pressure if an edge lifts.

The iron must never touch bare neoprene, which scorches. If you have not done this before, test a small offcut on the inside of a leg first.

Looking after it

A patched suit can be washed as normal. Keep the leftover sheet and the heat shielding paper together in the tube it came in; the paper is reusable and you need it for every repair.
