Gear Aid Tenacious Tape GORE-TEX Hex Fabric Patches put real GORE-TEX fabric over the hole in your rain shell. Each pack holds two black adhesive-backed repair patches, a hexagon and a rectangle, that press on in the field and stay on through the wash. Snag a jacket on scrub halfway along a wet walk and you can patch it at the next rest stop and keep walking dry.
What it fixes
- Tears, punctures and ember holes in GORE-TEX rain jackets and shells
- Rips in waterproof overpants and ski pants
- Holes in GORE-TEX gloves
- Tears in waders
The hexagon measures 6.4 x 7.1 cm and the rectangle 6.4 x 10 cm. Use them as they come, or trim either one to suit a tear along a seam or a sleeve. Both are black, so they sit quietly on dark shells and stand out on bright ones. For a large tear or a blown seam, pair the patch with Aquaseal FD or Seam Grip WP adhesive for the toughest repair.
How to use it
- Clean and dry the area around the tear, brushing off any dirt or grit. Hold off machine washing a torn jacket until it is patched, so the tear does not grow.
- Choose or cut a patch that overlaps the tear by at least 12 mm all round, and round off any corners you cut so they cannot catch and lift.
- Peel the backing, lay the patch over the tear and press firmly from the centre outwards to push out air bubbles.
- For the strongest bond, warm the patch with an iron on its low setting.
The jacket is ready to wear straight away, and the adhesive keeps strengthening over the next 12 to 24 hours.
Looking after it
Patched gear goes in the wash as normal. When you re-proof the jacket, use a wash-in water repellent: spray-on repellents soften the patch adhesive. Keep spare patches in their original packet so the backing stays clean.
To take a patch off later, dry cleaning lifts it most easily. At home, warm it with an iron for 30 seconds, peel slowly from one corner and clean away any residue with rubbing alcohol.
