Description

Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Repair Hex Patches are pre-cut, peel-and-stick repair patches for outdoor fabric. A pack holds four hexagons in nylon or clear PVC that press on by hand and stay on through rain and the washing machine. The six-sided shape has no sharp corner to catch and lift, and it sits neatly beside a seam, a zip or a down baffle without any trimming.

What it fixes

  • Rips and ember holes in down and synthetic puffer jackets, before the fill escapes.
  • Tears in tent flies, tarps and sleeping bag shells.
  • Holes in rain jackets, including GORE-TEX fabric.
  • Worn patches on packs and sleeping mats.

The patches stick to nylon, polyester, vinyl and PVC, non-oiled leather and GORE-TEX fabric. On silnylon they are an emergency fix only. Oiled or waxed leather and greasy fabric will not hold them.

What is in each pack

  • Black, OD Green and Clear: two large and two small patches.
  • Black and Clear: four large patches, two black nylon and two clear.

A large patch measures 6.4 x 7.1 cm and a small one 3.8 x 4.2 cm. Black and OD Green are 70 denier nylon; Clear is a see-through vinyl that lets the fabric colour show, so it suits bright jackets where a black patch would stand out.

How to use it

  1. Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol to lift dirt and body oil, and trim any loose threads.
  2. Peel the backing and lay the patch over the tear at room temperature.
  3. Rub it down firmly from the centre, pushing out bubbles and pressing the edges flat.
  4. For a large hole, put a second patch on the inside of the fabric.

The patch holds straight away, which is what makes it a good thing to carry in a first aid kit or a jacket pocket. The adhesive reaches full strength after 24 hours, so leave washing until then. Within that first day a badly placed patch can be lifted and moved without leaving residue.

Looking after it

Keep unused patches flat in their packet somewhere cool and dry. If you re-proof a patched jacket with a water repellent spray, the treatment can soften the adhesive; let the garment dry overnight without touching the patch and the bond comes back.

FAQ's

How many patches are in a pack of Tenacious Tape Hex Patches?
Each pack of Tenacious Tape Hex Patches holds four patches. Black, OD Green and Clear packs have two large and two small patches. The Black and Clear pack has four large patches, two in black nylon and two in clear.

What size are Tenacious Tape Hex Patches?
A large Tenacious Tape Hex Patch measures 6.4 x 7.1 cm and a small one measures 3.8 x 4.2 cm. The small size suits a single down baffle, and the large size covers bigger tears in tents, packs and rain jackets.

Can you wash a jacket with a Tenacious Tape Hex Patch on it?
Yes. Tenacious Tape Hex Patches are machine washable once the adhesive has had 24 hours to reach full strength. Press the edges down firmly when you apply the patch so the wash has nothing to lift.

What fabrics do Tenacious Tape Hex Patches stick to?
Tenacious Tape Hex Patches stick to nylon, polyester, vinyl and PVC, non-oiled leather and GORE-TEX fabric. Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol first. On silnylon Gear Aid treat a patch as a temporary emergency repair only.

Should I choose the clear or black Tenacious Tape Hex Patch?
Choose clear Tenacious Tape Hex Patches for coloured gear, because the fabric shows through and the repair is hard to see. Choose black or OD Green nylon for dark or olive fabric, where a woven patch blends in better than a glossy clear one.

Can you remove a Tenacious Tape Hex Patch?
Yes. A Tenacious Tape Hex Patch can be lifted and moved within the first 24 hours without leaving residue. Later on, warm the patch with an iron on low heat for 30 seconds, peel from one edge, and clean up with rubbing alcohol.

Do Tenacious Tape Hex Patches need heat or sewing?
No. Tenacious Tape Hex Patches are peel-and-stick. Remove the backing and press the patch on by hand at room temperature. No iron, needle or glue is needed, which is why they work as a field repair on a walk.
