Description
Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Mini Patches are a pocket-sized repair kit for the moment a branch or a campfire ember opens up your down jacket. Six pre-cut patches, three in black nylon and three in clear PVC, ride in a slim hard case that slips into a lid pocket or a first aid kit. Peel one, press it over the tear and the feathers stay inside where they belong. Each patch is 38 x 64 mm.
What it fixes
The size is the point. A 38 mm wide patch sits neatly across a single down baffle, so it covers a rip without bridging the stitching or bunching the fill. It is the fix you want in the pack on a cold night in the Snowy Mountains, when a snag on a tree has a jacket shedding feathers.
- Rips and ember holes in down and synthetic puffer jackets
- Tears in sleeping bag shells
- Small holes in GORE-TEX rain jackets
- Nicks in tent flies and tarps
- Worn spots on high-wear areas, where a patch doubles as an abrasion shield
The patches stick to nylon, polyester, vinyl, rubber, GORE-TEX fabric and non-oiled leather, and to PVC, TPU and neoprene. Choose clear on coloured fabric, where the jacket shows through and the repair almost disappears, and black on dark gear. For bigger tears across several baffles, a larger Tenacious Tape patch or roll is the better fit.
How to use it
- Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol to lift dirt and body oil, and snip off any loose threads.
- Fold the patch along the perforation in its backing and peel from the end with the Gear Aid logo.
- Lay the patch over the tear and press it down firmly with your fingers.
- Smooth out any bubbles and make sure the edges sit flat.
The patch holds as soon as it is on. The adhesive reaches full strength after 24 hours, and within that first day a crooked patch can be lifted and moved without leaving sticky residue behind. It bonds best between 10 and 40 °C, so on a frosty morning warm the patch in your hand or a pocket first.
Looking after it
Patched gear can go through the washing machine once the adhesive has had its 24 hours. Keep the spare patches in their pocket case so the backing stays clean and flat for next time.
