Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Flex Patches are the patch for repairs that have to stretch. Made from clear TPU, they bend and give with the material underneath instead of cracking or lifting at the edges, and they seal airtight, so a slow leak in an inflatable stops for good. A pack holds two 7.6 x 12.7 cm patches, ready to cut to whatever shape the job needs.
What it fixes
Anything that inflates, bends or stretches. Hit a pinhole in the lilo at the start of a week at the beach and five minutes with a Flex Patch has it holding air again.
- Pinholes and small punctures in pool floats, lilos, river tubes and other inflatables
- Holes and splits in vinyl outdoor furniture and covers
- Rubber and PVC gear
- Stretch fabrics such as lycra and fleece, where a stiff patch would pull away
- Worn or scuffed spots that need a tough, puncture-resistant cover
Flex Patches stick to nylon, polyester, lycra, fleece, vinyl and PVC, rubber, non-oiled leather and TPU. Being clear, they let the colour of the gear show through. For a large tear in a fabric jacket, a nylon Tenacious Tape patch is the better match.
How to use it
- Find the leak. On an inflatable, pour soapy water over it while it is blown up and press down: the hole shows as a stream of bubbles. Mark the spot.
- Let the air out and dry the surface, then clean the area with isopropyl alcohol.
- Cut a piece of patch that overlaps the hole by about 6 mm all round, and round the corners.
- Peel the backing, lay the patch over the hole and press it down firmly.
No heat, no glue and no sewing, just finger pressure at room temperature. The whole repair takes about five minutes.
Looking after it
A patched garment can go through the wash, and the seal holds when wet. Keep the spare patch flat in a bag or container so its backing stays clean for the next puncture.
