Seam Grip WP Waterproof Sealant and Adhesive
Description
Description
Gear Aid Seam Grip WP is a clear urethane seam sealant and repair adhesive in a 28 g tube. It seals the seams on a tent fly and glues a tear shut in a pack or a rain jacket, and it cures into a flexible rubbery bond that stays put through wind, washing and being stuffed in a bag.
What it fixes
- Leaking seams on tents, tarps, awnings and rain gear. One tube covers about 3.6 m of seam in a 6 mm bead.
- Small holes and tears in nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl.
- Pinholes in sleeping mats and self-inflating mattresses.
- Boot soles and rands that have started to peel away.
Once cured it handles use from -29 to 82 °C, so a repair made at home holds on a frosty morning at Falls Creek and in a hot tent in the Kimberley. It is made for PU-coated and uncoated fabrics. Silicone-treated fabrics and silnylon need a silicone-based sealer.
How to use it
- Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. On anything that is not fabric, scuff it lightly with sandpaper first.
- For seams, pull the stitching taut and brush a thin film over it and under the fabric fold. Seal a tent from the inside.
- For a hole or tear, put masking tape on the inside, then spread Seam Grip WP on the outside to 13 mm past the damage.
- Lay it flat and leave it for 8 to 12 hours.
Work somewhere between 16 and 38 °C with a bit of humidity in the air, as moisture is what cures it. A slight tackiness on a fresh repair is normal and wears off with use; a dusting of talc-free powder removes it straight away.
In a hurry on the track? Let it cure for 2 hours, then press a Tenacious Tape patch over the top, 13 mm wider than the adhesive all round.
Shelf life and storage
To keep a part-used tube going, squeeze the adhesive up to the neck, wipe the thread clean, put a small piece of foil over the opening and screw the cap on over it. Then seal the tube in a plastic bag and keep it in the freezer.
