Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Repair Patches are round, pre-cut repair patches made from Tenacious Tape, the peel-and-stick fabric tape that holds where duct tape lets go. The pack has two kinds: black nylon for dark gear and clear for everything else. They go on by hand in under a minute, with nothing to cut, sew or heat.
What it fixes
- Snags and ember holes in down and synthetic puffer jackets, before the fill leaks out.
- Tears in tent flies, tent floors and tarps.
- Holes in sleeping bag shells and rain jackets.
- Worn spots on packs and stuff sacks.
A round patch has no corner to catch on a pack strap and peel back, which is the usual way a home-cut square of tape fails. The clear patch lets the fabric colour show through, so the repair is hard to spot on a bright jacket. The black nylon patch has a woven face that blends into dark fabric.
Tenacious Tape sticks to nylon, polyester, vinyl, canvas, rubber and non-oiled leather. On silnylon it is a temporary field fix only, and it will not hold on oily, waxed or dirty fabric.
How to use it
- Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt and body oil. An alcohol swab from a first aid kit does the job on a walk.
- Trim loose threads and push any escaping down back inside.
- Peel the backing, centre the patch over the hole and lay it down flat.
- Rub firmly from the middle outwards to push out bubbles and seat the edge.
- For a big hole, put a second patch on the inside of the fabric.
Looking after it
Keep unused patches flat in their packet in a cool, dry place; a lid pocket or a first aid kit is a good home for them. Patched gear can go through the washing machine once the adhesive has had time to settle.
