The Black Diamond Storm 500-R is the head torch for people who are out in whatever the weather is doing: a sealed, rechargeable light with enough reach for route finding and enough low-end runtime to live in your pack all week.

Who it's for

Bushwalkers, climbers and trail runners who start before dawn or finish after dark, and who can plug in between trips. If you are walking out of a Blue Mountains canyon by torchlight, or packing up a wet camp on the Overland Track at 5 am, this is the kind of light you want on your head: compact, 100 g, and built to keep working when it is soaked.

Brightness and runtime together

On its highest setting the Storm 500-R puts out 500 lumens and runs for 7 hours, with a further 20 hours of reserve light after that. Dimmed to its lowest setting it runs for 350 hours. You will spend most nights somewhere between the two, and Brightness Memory means the torch comes back on at the level you chose instead of jumping to full power.

PowerTap gives you full power with a tap on the housing when you need to check the track ahead, then drops you back to your dimmed setting.

Beam shape

You get a distance mode and a proximity mode. Distance throws the beam 120 m on the highest setting for spotting markers and scanning a creek crossing; proximity spreads the light for cooking, reading a map and sorting gear in the tent. On the lowest setting the beam reaches 12 m.

Red, green and blue night-vision modes keep your eyes adjusted to the dark and keep you from blinding the rest of the hut. There is also a strobe, and a lock mode so the torch does not switch itself on inside your pack.

Charging and battery

The 2400 mAh lithium-ion battery is built in and charges through a micro-USB port, so you top it up from a wall plug, the ute or a power bank. There are no loose cells to carry.

Weather resistance

The housing is rated IP67: dustproof, and tested to keep operating at least 1 m underwater for 30 minutes. Rain, river crossings and a drop in a puddle are all inside what it is built for.

Headband

The elastic headband is made with recycled Repreve fibre and sits comfortably against skin.
