Description

Gear Aid Seam Grip FC Fast Cure Seam Sealant is a water-based urethane seam sealer for the repair and upkeep of tents, in a 59 ml bottle with a brush built into the cap. It is thin enough to paint along a seam rather than squeeze out in a bead, so one bottle goes a long way: about 18 m of seam, enough to reseal the fly of a family tent in one go. It dries clear and flexible in 2 hours.

What it fixes

  • Leaking or weeping seams on tent flies and floors.
  • Seams on tarps, awnings and pop-up shelters.
  • Old tents where the factory seam tape has started to peel.
  • New tents that were sold with unsealed seams.

It works on nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl. It is not for silicone-treated fabrics or silnylon, which need a silicone sealer. It is also a sealer, not a glue: for a tear or a hole, use a thicker urethane adhesive or a repair patch.

How to use it

  1. Pitch the tent or lay the fly out flat so the seams are taut, clean and dry.
  2. Work from the inside of the tent. Brush a thin film along the stitching and under the seam fold.
  3. Leave it to cure for 2 hours before packing the tent away.

Apply it somewhere between 16 and 38 °C. A still, dry afternoon in the backyard is ideal; a cold night in the garage is not. Once cured the seal handles use from -29 to 82 °C, so it copes with frost in the high country and a fly baking in the summer sun.

Shelf life and storage

Store the bottle in a cool, dry place with the cap on tight. Seam Grip FC is water based and is not freeze-thaw stable, so keep it out of the freezer and out of a shed that drops below zero.

FAQ's

How long does Seam Grip FC take to dry?
Seam Grip FC cures in 2 hours. Leave the tent pitched or the fly laid out flat for that time so the sealed seams do not stick to each other, then pack it away as normal.

How much seam does one bottle of Seam Grip FC cover?
One 59 ml bottle of Seam Grip FC seals about 18 m of seam in a film 6 mm wide. That is enough for the fly seams of most family tents. Measure your seams first if you are sealing a large canvas tent.

Does Seam Grip FC work on silnylon?
No. Seam Grip FC does not bond to silicone-treated fabrics or silnylon. It is made for nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl with a polyurethane coating or no coating. A silicone-coated tent needs a silicone-based seam sealer.

What is the difference between Seam Grip FC and Seam Grip WP?
Seam Grip FC is a thin, water-based sealer that brushes on and cures in 2 hours, made for sealing long runs of tent seam. Seam Grip WP is a thicker urethane adhesive that cures in 8 to 12 hours and also glues tears and holes.

Do you seal tent seams on the inside or the outside?
Gear Aid say to apply Seam Grip FC to the inside seams of the tent. Brush a thin film over the stitching and under the fold of the seam, with the fabric pulled taut, and let it cure for 2 hours.

Can Seam Grip FC be stored in the freezer?
No. Seam Grip FC is water based and is not freeze-thaw stable, so freezing ruins it. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place. This is the opposite of Seam Grip WP, which keeps best in the freezer.

What temperature do you need to apply Seam Grip FC?
Apply Seam Grip FC between 16 and 38 °C. After it has cured, the seal handles use from -29 to 82 °C, so a tent sealed at home is fine in alpine frost and in summer heat.
