Description

Gear Aid Seam Grip+WP Waterproof Sealant is a clear urethane seam sealer and repair adhesive. This is the large 226.8 g tube, eight times the size of the 28 g tube most people carry, and it is the one to buy for a whole family tent, a swag, an awning or a season of repairs. It cures into a flexible rubbery seal that moves with the fabric and goes through the wash.

What it fixes

  • Leaking seams on large tents, tarps, awnings and camper canvas.
  • Holes and tears in nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl.
  • Pinholes in sleeping mats and self-inflating mattresses.
  • Boot soles and rands that have started to lift.

Once cured it handles use from -29 to 82 °C. It is made for PU-coated and uncoated fabrics. Silicone-treated fabrics and silnylon need a silicone-based sealer, as this one will not bond to them.

The size cuts both ways. A big tube is good value for a big job, but an opened tube starts to cure from the neck, so for one small repair or a kit you carry on a walk the 28 g tube makes more sense.

How to use it

  1. Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Scuff anything that is not fabric with sandpaper first.
  2. For seams, work from the inside of the tent. Pull the stitching taut and brush a thin film over it and under the seam fold.
  3. For a hole or tear, put masking tape on the inside, then spread the adhesive on the outside to 13 mm past the damage.
  4. Keep the repair level and leave it for 8 to 12 hours before packing the tent away.

Work somewhere between 16 and 38 °C with humidity above 40%, because moisture in the air is what cures it. A slight tackiness on a fresh seam is normal and wears off with use; a dusting of talc-free powder takes it off straight away. Wear gloves, and wipe up wet adhesive with rubbing alcohol.

Shelf life and storage

Storage matters more with a tube this size, since most people will not use it in one go. Squeeze the adhesive up to the neck, wipe the thread clean, put a small piece of foil over the opening and screw the cap on over it. Then seal the tube in a plastic bag and keep it in the freezer.

FAQ's

How big is the large tube of Seam Grip+WP?
The large tube of Seam Grip+WP holds 226.8 g of sealant, which is 8 oz net weight. That is eight times the 28 g tube. It suits sealing a whole family tent, an awning or camper canvas rather than a single repair.

How long does Seam Grip+WP take to dry?
Seam Grip+WP cures in 8 to 12 hours. Keep the repair level and leave the tent unpacked for that time. For a faster repair to a hole, let it cure for 2 hours and then cover it with a Tenacious Tape patch.

Does Seam Grip+WP work on silnylon or silicone-coated tents?
No. Seam Grip+WP is a urethane sealant for PU-coated and uncoated fabrics such as nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl. It will not bond to silicone-treated fabric or silnylon, which needs a silicone-based seam sealer.

Can Seam Grip+WP be used on a canvas tent or swag?
Yes. Gear Aid list canvas among the fabrics Seam Grip+WP bonds to, along with nylon, polyester and vinyl. Clean and dry the canvas first, brush a thin film into the stitching and leave it level for 8 to 12 hours.

How do you store an opened tube of Seam Grip+WP?
Squeeze the Seam Grip+WP up to the neck of the tube, wipe the thread, cover the opening with a small piece of foil and screw the cap on over it. Keep the tube in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer.

What temperature do you need to apply Seam Grip+WP?
Apply Seam Grip+WP between 16 and 38 °C with relative humidity above 40%, because moisture in the air is what cures it. After curing, the seal handles use from -29 to 82 °C.

Can you wash gear sealed with Seam Grip+WP?
Yes. Seam Grip+WP is washable once it has fully cured, and the seal stays flexible, so a repaired jacket, pack or tent fly can be washed and put back into use.
